HI to all.
Would you be interested in driving along STANAGE EDGE.?
After the derbyshire run 21.4.07 I drove to Stannage via REDMIRES only 10 mins away from todays finnish.

This is what we found
There are two areas of rocks that are very close to one another
TO MUCH FOR A TERRANO to get over, however with a little TEAMWORK. WE CAN ALL DRIVE THIS FANTASTIC ROUTE . :p

We could do same as every one else and use waffle boards
OR
The erea around these large rocks is litted with smaller ones .
SO HOW ABOUT A BIT OF ROAD BUILDING .re arranging some of the smaller ones
to get us over the larger rocks

I WOULD SAY 1 HOUR WOULD BE ALL THE TIME IT WOULD TAKE TO MAKE THE ROUTE PASSABLE.
COULD WE DO IT AS A CLUB ACTIVITY?

Well you know I'm up for it, so what do others think?

We can add this onto a lanes day for those who are interested.

Little far for me to go for that one but I am sure you guys will have fun

sounds good, seeing as probably one of the most famous routes around.

we could adopt it, get an article in 4x4 mag etc show those pesky ramblers how rocks should be used as an aid not a barrier....

even be cheeky if not seen as littering and put some sort of sign/notice there saying we did it, perhaps with approval/sponsership of the peak park authority and derbyshire county council.

then do a comprehensive litter pick up in area along track. all good pr.

Certainly would need local authority/PDNP support & approval, otherwise it might constitute obstructing a RoW while the work was in progress. :?
CRAG have got a sign on the box at the top of the Wayfarer, as this needed replacing & bolting down 2 years ago as it kept on getting knicked. LA approval etc was sought due to the sensitive nature of the site (SSSI).

BUT for work to happen then it would need insurance, and all usual H&S rules would have to be followed, i.e. safety vests & helmets, no kids on site, most LA's who do allow lane repairs to take place do not allow any powered tools etc.

And I have a feeling that the majority of users of Stanage want the challenge. The general user might perceive our actions as a "dumbing down" of the route if rocks were repositioned, although I have a feeling about 3 years ago some work was done (don't know by who) that moved a lot of the larger rocks to the sides of the track.

May be better to consider a day with waffle boards etc, aiming to start with Stanage, then take the rest of the day as it comes, OR plan a day of lane litter clearing & tidying, with a drive up it at the same time?

I read this last night but decided to think about it before posting.

I for one would like to have a go at it as it stands before doing any work.

I concur with Jonathan and Rbrt about liasing with the relevant authorities and also about the possible perception of "dumbing down".

Perhaps opinion from a wider range of people should be sort on the matter, post's on Diff Lock and Mud Club etc, letters to the Magazines etc to guage opinion, but this would probably be best done in concert with the parks authority.

Ironically I suspect that for these types of works to be carried out the authority would probably want to place a TRO on the lane for the duration, which would probably only be a day or 2 but they might TRO for a little longer to give extra time if needed.

I think from what I've read so far, that people are getting the wrong end of the stick here, its not about dumbing down or rebuilding as such, its more about moving the loose boulders around to the fixed ones to give steps up. Much of this type of thing has already been done, and needs maybe half an hour to an hours work to enable TIIs to travel over without damage.

Last night Ian and myself drove all but the worst of the route, and discussed moving some boulders into place that were already there to enable us to finish the route. It would not have taken long, but with only the two of us we felt we had little back up if one of us became really stuck. This is why we were looking at running a group over that are prepared to get out and man handle somne rocks, before we get stuck, therby preventing damage to the shinys.

fair enough, guess not making it fit for corsas  but just what anyone would do if travelling along and found had to make minor adjustments to get thru. sure that doesnt need permission, just means to an end as rocks already there its not like we would be trailering in loads of hard core, milk crates or timber as seen on other rebuilding projects.

best as said just make it start of a general but prepared trip and see where it goes, the litter picking is something we should all do every time we're out as i gather you did by going back for those tyres elsewhere.

Hi
I drove this route with nellie and GrugF and it is a very challenging route
We only had problems with GrugF low slung patrol but in the end we all made it up the full length on the track it is a track where every inch has to be planed and is a very different experince to the normal green lanes the club drive
We had to move the rocks around to make it passably for ourselves .
I think by just moving rocks to get the cars up cannot be classed as rebuilding the lane.
I will be interested in driving this route again. I have all the necessary equipment to assist in getting the other cars up the route, Winch waffle boards and tow strops

OK, maybe the idea of driving as is is what ian intended, just the wording "put something back" suggested actions that could be intended as works. And thats what led to me wondering about insurance etc.

I'd still wonder what the people seeking a challenge in spammed up vehicles may think - I'd prefer a quieter day, if there is such a one around Stanage, to try & avoid too many huffs & puffs from the winch equipped bog snorkeling competitive types.

Hi
Let me know where and when if its legal I'll give it a go.

STANNAGE VIA REDMIRES

HI GUYS.
SORRY about the misleading "put something back"what was on my mind is by moving some smaller rocks weighing around ( 25 kgs) each it would help anyone else doing this route in the future.
We would still need waffle boards to do it if driven from the other direction
..............................WHICH WOULD BE UP HILL...................................
Rising approx 2mtrs in 40 mtrs length
WITH A LOT GREATER RISK OF SLIPPING OFF WAFFLES AND DAMAGING STEPS ,SUMP, DIFF ETC.

HENCE driving from REDMIRES (down hill over BAD section ) which would be ok for the shinies.once rocks were moved into place.

If I am in the country when you plan this I will try to make it.

Working in the Carribean for 6 weeks from beginning of May.

OK FOUND THE PICTURE I WAS THINKING OF IN. JANUARY 2007 TOTAL OF ROAD PAGE 55.
IT STATES.
CLASSIC ROCK CRAWL WITH FABULOUS VEIWS OVER THE PEAK DISTRICT.
THE HIGHLIGHT IS THE CLIMB UP STANNAGE EDGE.itself steep and rocky, with the added attraction of a vast drop off to one side which means that you should think very carfully about what your doing in icy weather.regular rock falls mean the tracks character is ever changing, but whether you tackle it going up or down the hill, its a gem even in the depths of winter .
