For those thinking of carring out mods I have put a reply in here:

Greater ground clearance can be had, but please remember that you will get more rock and roll when normal driving and you roll over rate is increased slightly.

The first serious mod you should all consider are strong front and rear recovery points. The mods you will find out that are essential are rarely the sexy mods that you can see, like huge tyres and lifts, whinches etc, but the mods made on the grounds of saftey.

A CB is also a very worthwhile accessory to add and fancy ones are just not needed as comms are rarely needed above 1 mile max. Very often just yards is all needed.

A second bit of kit to have is a strong recovery strop. Rated at least 5 tons or more. Don't even consider a tow rope they are far less than useless unless trebeled or more and then trebeled again and trebeled in length

Try a lorry ratchet strap with the metal ends removed, these are cheap enough  strong enough and long enough. I usually carry at least 3 of them to cover everthing. Friends of mine have strops rated up to 17 tons or more. Think of the pressure to overcome moving a stuck 2 ton vehicle from mud 8O Imagine the horriffic backlash if a rope or low rated strop broke. If you have a strong stomach search U tube for vids of this

Shackles are also another usefull bit of kit. Picked up for around £3 - £4 each or more for test rated ones. I have them test rated to 7.5 tons.

I could go on with a kit list for you all, but common sense tells you things like a small spade, first aid kit etc.

Perhaps we should start a new thread with things you should carry in general??

A new thread has been started on this "kit to carry"

Most of which i got of the bay,i do have a tow rope but it's only rated at 4tons,so i think it will be getting uprated! :?

Sorry to but in here, but I think we need to be a bit clearer about "ratings". I've seen 50mm single thickness tow straps on Ebay claimed to be "rated" at 4 tons (sometimes 5 tons). This is the breaking strain NOT safe working load for pulling. The safe working load for pulling is going to be about a third of that - i.e. maybe a ton and a half at best. If that is what you have, it needs to be pensioned off - or at least, reserved for towing broken down Fiestas on a tarmac road.

I've often seen it suggested that for safe offroad recovery, you need something like a 25mm diameter nylon tow rope (or equivalent strap) rated at around 12 tons and 4.75 ton SWL tested bow shackles (breaking strain around 25 - 30 tons).

Cheers
Andrew

Glad all the newbies had a good time and are looking at joining us again, maybe next time I will have learnt more names that The Minstral and Boys haha.

Its Nick by the way and next time i will have the CB myself  my mate is a bit shy

Everyone should have a CB even if its just to listen whats going on!

Oh and thanks for the lolly

This means I have to take note and remember
Yeah I’m sure it must be daunting when you are faced with us lot when some of us have already met.

Yes the banter on CB often makes the day a bit more fun, especially when there is less tea stops due to the weather.

Oh and I found a cow joke, however the vulgarness was not audible when I realised JonathanM had his 8year old with him!!

Lollys & cake's are never a problem. kind of becoming a habit now.

I can't believe how well the Patrol went up and down some of the hills andI can't emphasize as to how much I enjoyed it.

I'm hoping all the rain will help me grow higher than the 5ft I stand at now!!

Was nice to see a patrol in our group as I missed Dads old one (only for a short while, as I think the Landy is tons better and hell of a lot more comfy and warm)

Hope to see everyone back out in December!!

*mince pies in December*
