Cheers Rick. Accu.co.uk sell some double ended threaded rods so will have a look at those.

I was hopeful that my internal micrometer would arrive today but it didn’t. :( Will meadure the cylinder bores on Monday and then have a chat with the engine guy’s. Might be an option to rebore the bores and fit oversized piston rings instead of replacing the whole liners. They can rebore the bores onsite and is probably the most cost effective.

Ok guy’s, I have screwed up.

At work we used to have an internal micrometer which looks like a telescopic gauge. So that is what I ordered Friday, or so I thought.

Today the postman brought me a nice telescopic gauge that is not an internal micrometer. :lol

A bore gauge is on order, will be delivered tomorrow.

Had a quick play with the telescopic gauge and when afterwards measuring it with the calipers, the cylinder bore is exactly 85mm. Limit is 85.00-85.03mm.

Finally got round to do a bit of measuring in between the rain showers.

The bore gauge was delivered yesterday but I realised that my non digital vernier calipers are 26 years old and may not be as accurate anymore. So I ordered a set of digital calipers and check their accuracy with my feeler gauge and they were spot on.

I set the bore gauge to the max allowable dimension (85.03mm) and measured every bore. The bores are between 85.005 and 85.018 so all well within limits :D

Now I will be on the hunt for a set of correct piston rings as the old ones are out of limits and the new ones don’t fit. I have delayed the postage of my turbo till I new what was going on with the bores. Now they are all within limits the turbo will be picked up today.

I knew your bores were OK they had to be without a wear lip, Rick:clap

True, it stays a mystery for the time being.

What I will never know is if the rings have been changed sometime before I purchased the truck. Maybe that an aftermarket set was fitted with no attention paid to the ring gaps etc. Or it could have been like this since it was built.

I am very reluctant to order a pair of rings of the internet now. Will ask the engine shop if they can source them for me as it is their bread and butter. Might cost a bit more but at least they are correct.

I agree with that, but give them a piston with its rings so they can be sure they are after the correct parts, Rick

Piston and rings is ready and waiting. Also included a copy of the page with all the measurements so they should have all the information needed.

Midland Turbo’s received my turbo earlier today and have now completed their assessment. The main parts of the turbo are in reasonable condition and will just be overhauled. One glaring issue was the control rod on the actuator. This was completely corroded and the bearing was seized. In such a way that they can’t be separated anymore. For £245 + VAT they are overhauling the turbo completely and replace the components that can’t be repaired. Not a bad price to be honest, should take around a week.

Another new bit of information I found out is that I have no hydraulic lifters. On the “newer” RD28 they have used solid lifters with shims.

New piston rings arrived yesterday from Australia. They fit perfectly and the ring clearance is back in limits. :thumb2

The new AMC cylinder head has just arrived in the UK from Spain. DPD should deliver it tomorrow sometime.

I know Rick, it just makes no sense at all.

Cylinder head arrived today and it is plug and play so that saves another trip to the engine specialist. Just need to shim the lifters and the shims are bloody expensive. £23.95 ex VAT for genuine shims. The hunt is on to find them somewhere else. Might be another parcel from Australia as they are only £1.90 over there. :sly

Bally hell that is expensive unless that is for a large quantity of variable thicknesses, Rick

I wish! That is the price per shim and not a whole set.

Below is the price list from the local dealer and the price on the right does not include VAT.

Sorry the image posted when enlarged could not see sizes clearly but they are taking the piss, search on line for the size of shim you require I did and paid pennies for mine, Rick

Started off quite well today, drilling out a sheared off bolt. Together with the cylinder head bolts it bolts the head to the block.
