I thought it better to start a new thread rather than hi jack your, Rick

No issues from my side if you had posted the photo’s on this thread. However now it is easy to find for somebody in the same position.

With the weather improving I thought it was time to get my compression tested. I had hoped for slightly better figures.

Only done cylinder 2 to 6 as I haven’t got the socket to undo injector #1. However the values of the other cylinders are bad enough and I don’t think that cylinder 1 will be that different.

#2 280psi, with oil 340psi
#3 240psi, with oil 300psi
#4 280psi, with oil 340psi
#5 280psi, with oil 400psi
#6 280psi, with oil 380psi

According to the manual the values should be between 355psi and 440psi.

Cylinder 5 & 6 seem to be indicating worn piston rings or liner. Whilst in cylinder 2, 3 & 4 it seems to possibly be a combination of worn piston rings/liner and potentially the valves not seating properly anymore.

Ah that is not so good, looks like rings/bores are worn, how many miles has it done? mine is pulling like a train, just done a 350 mile round trip today empty trailer up loaded with a digger back, absolutely flew along, Rick

Rick, it has done 127k miles so not that much at all. There shouldn’t be so much wear with that mileage.

If it was just the piston rings then it wouldn’t be as bad as they are “easily” changed at home. To replace the liners the block needs to go a specialist as the tops of the liners need skimming after installation. :(

I need to price the parts up and see if it is economically viable to repair. If not, I will keep it running in its present state till the MOT expires.

Glad to hear that yours is back to it’s old self! Was about to ask you on your thread. :thumb2

Funny my mate asked me today on the trip as to how yours was getting on, but could not say as had not heard, anyway I suggest you take the head of and check the bores, as you say at that mileage there should be very little wear if any, but of course you do not know what previous owners had done, I came across a lady the other week who asked me to change her oil and filter, I asked when it was last done and she said "I do not know I have never done it" now she bought this motor more than 3 years ago, the oil was black "I mean glass test jet black" the paper filter fell to bits in the housing, I used a suction pump to suck all the bits out, I say no more, Rick

I think that you are right Rick.

Just looking where I can get the parts from. As I need the truck to be back in action as soon as possible. Just praying that everything comes out allright. As I don’t think that the engine has been apart since it was built!

Parts seem to become more scarce. Places that used to stock a lot of Patrol parts are no longer selling them.

Rick, where did you buy your cylinder head bolts and the hydraulic lifters? I can buy it all on onlinecarparts.co.uk but it comes from Europe, so it incurs imports charges and duty.

Thanks.

Getting her ready for open heart surgery.

Made some space in the engine bay. The plan is to strip the engine back to the bare block tomorrow and lift the head on Sunday. Otherwise occupied on Monday but hoping to drop the sump on Tuesday whilst waiting for the parts to arrive.

Contemplating if I should take the head away to have the glow plugs removed whilst the head is off.

Go easy with those Glow Plugs!!!!

Have you tried Rob at Japanese 4x4 Spares in Honiley?

He's ace for bits :thumbs2

Yes Zac, that is why I am not even going to try myself. :D

Best way to get them out is to get the engine nice and hot. But with the engine in bits I am planning on just taking the head to a specialist and let them remove the glow plugs. This is probably a better option then me shearing them off and them having to drill them out.

However I only have them changed if i can get the compression up.

Japanese 4x4 spares used to have all their kit on the website but they now seem to have gone to only supplying bushes and modifications. However I found everything I need apart from the hydraulic lifters/tappets. Hopefully Rick will disclose his supplier. :p

Head bolts £32 delivered kvadistributors(25705)

Head Gasket inlet and exhaust cam cover etc two packs total about £60
grahams 125

Valve lifter set mag_engines(6292) £98.40 + vat but only one set left, local factors £27 each ouch

All these are Ebay sellers, Rick

Thanks Rick!

I had hoped that your motor factors would be a bit cheaper! Managed to source all parts needed apart from the valve lifters. If I remember correctly then the set on eBay comes from the United Arab Emirates.

Yes correct but delivery is fast, I had a vac pump from them a while ago and no problems, Rick

Cheers Rick, if you have a good experience with the guys from the UAE then I might just order them. :thumb2

Ordered all my other parts today and they should arrive on Monday or Tuesday. With that in mind I continued stripping the engine down but I don’t want to strip it too far until the parts come in.

cont...

Tomorrow I am hoping to drain the oil and then remove the sump on Sunday. Between Sunday and Tuesday the oil that is left in the bottom of the engine can drain out so that the working area becomes a bit cleaner.

Also removed some scrap that I don’t use anyway. Had the aircon system drained 11 years ago when I replaced the chassis. However I never filled it back up again so it might as well come out.

Only not too sure if I also remove the aircon radiator and fan behind the grill. Maybe leaving the aircon radiator in place protects the engine radiator from damage.

Rick, hopefully you can just give some advice please.

As I need to get the camshaft out I have cracked the bolt that holds the camshaft sprocket. Do I also need to remove the bolt from the fuel pump sprocket?

Asking now as it is a lot easier to crack the bolts while I can use the holding force of the cam belt. Once it is all dismantled I would otherwise have to find another way of securing the sprockets to loosen the bolts.
