Just be careful with the really cheap ones as sometimes they won't release the pressure.
Mine was about 60 quid and has been ok so far.

Sorry Elty, only just read your very generous offer! I don’t really travel to Derbyshire but only live 10 minutes from Zac on the other side of the M42.

I have a few diesel engines so buying a compression tester might not be a bad idea. You can never have to many tools. :D I have seen a few diesel compression tester that are in the £150+ range which is a bit over the top for incidental use.

Rick’s idea of building my own one is also quite attractive. My only concern with building my own is that the soldering needs to be spot on and ai am not sure if I have the required tools.

This arrived today! I ordered it yesterday on Amazon and the expected delivery date was the beginning of the New Year. Had an update from Amazon this morning that my order was out for delivery!

The order was full filled by a company called Tools 2U Direct who sell loads of US PRO tools. I normally get the Halfords Advanced tools as I have a trade card and you get a life time warranty. However there are a couple of tools that Halfords don’t do but US PRO do. As far as I can see Tools 2U Direct are quite cheap and have good customer service so I will order more from them. https://www.tools2udirectsw.com/

Get it on the truck

It won’t go on the truck till after Christmas! Don’t want to break a glow plug or similar and then not being able to get one till the New Year. If I do it in the New Year then most items are next day delivery again. :D

At the moment Japanese4x4parts is a bit thin on Patrol parts anyway. I need to give them a call to see what they can do for me. At least I can collect the parts and don’t have to rely on a courier.

Rob is a geeza and Heidi is lovely too :whip: :lol

Always great on prices and being on our doorstep is a real bonus.

They for me are the Milners of the Midlands

Quote from Elty on a different thread.

“That is pretty bad for the fuel consumption.
Used to run a 2.8 swb at work towing a twin axle flat bed trailer loaded with a compact tractor and rear mounted flail/ scarifier unit and it used to return around 18-20 mpg.
Solo it would be between 25-30 mpg if driven steady on the motorway.
Definitely down on mpg.”

If I can get her to run at that mpg than she won’t be going anywhere. It now all comes down to money. Am I going to invest a lot of money on a possible engine rebuild on a 22 years old frame. Or cut my losses and buy something else?

I love the Patrol and its simplicity. The lack of electronic gizmos makes it bombproof. But at 22 years old, parts are becoming more difficult to source. About two years ago both Millner and Japanese4x4spares had all parts required to rebuild an engine listed on their website and in stock.

Millner now stock some parts but not even a gasket set and Japanese4x4spares don’t stock any engine related parts according to their website. Ks-international stock a few items but again no gasket set. The only one stocking most parts (if not all) are Japanese4x4parts.co.uk. They even do a reasonably priced flywheel for the 2.8. Of course this is only based on a look on their website and maybe more parts cab be ordered directly if I phone them. However the availability of parts is reducing.

I can probably do about 90% of an engine rebuilt at home so apart from the parts there shouldn’t be too much to add to the bill. Obviously all depending on the various parts coming of the engine easily and not ending up with broken glow plugs/injectors.

Cheers Elty.

I will first start with doing a compression test and see what we have to work with. It also depends a little bit on how easy it will be to find a new flywheel. The last time the clutch was replaced I was told that the flywheel really needs replacing. If I remember correctly the limit of movement on the dual mass flywheel is 1” and mine has 2”. If I can’t replace the flywheel then I am not going to rebuild the engine.

Never read the beginning of your thread :( but just had a look through it. How long did it take you to remove/install the engine in the Terrano? Did you work on your own or did you have a helping hand?

Was all done on my own.
Removing the engine was pretty straightforward and done and dusted in an afternoon.
Mine being an auto made it so much easier as i didn't have to do anything with the transmission as no input shaft to worry about finding the clearance for.
Not sure about the room available in the patrol.
Banshee will be able to give you pointers on that one as he pulled the lump from his trol.
Again the engine re fit was done in a few hours but i fully built it with all ancillaries on the stand before dropping it back in.

That doesn’t sound to bad at all!

It will be a learning curve as I have never removed the gearbox or an engine from a car. Give me a jet engine, landing gear or anything other aircraft related and I know my way around it.

Zac, (or any other Patrol owner :D) have you got any pointers? I was thinking about removing the transfer gearbox before pulling the gearbox itself. At least this will make it a bit lighter to handle. Regarding the engine, I don’t know the size difference between a Terrano engine and the Patrol engine. Apart from the fact that the Terrano is a 4 cylinder and the Patrol is a 6 cylinder. Strip it all back as much as I can before pulling it out?

All needs to be done without access to a lift.

Mine was all done on the drive at home,so a bit of crawling around under the motor was needed to remove the bell housing bolts, starter motor etc.
Having the body and suspension lifts definitely helped out there.

I am appealing to the greater knowledge of this forum. My 1998 Patrol Y61 2.8td has a very poor fuel economy and at times the performance is lacking. After trawling the internet I have come up with a dozen or so issues that can be causing these issues. The poor performance can be caused by the poor fuel economy and vice versa.

Fuel figures are: 10-12 mpg whilst towing (3.5 tonne) and about 15-17 mpg whilst empty.

The Patrol has done 127k and as far as I am aware has never had any engine work done apart from normal maintenance, including the timing belt.

I have recently bought a compression tester and this is where I will start. However as usual, one thing leads to another and before I start I would like to have a rough idea of the cost involved.

If the head has to come off due to poor compression than I am planning on rebuilding the whole engine. As I rather do it in one go instead of having to do it all again in 2 or 3 years time. Cost in parts for an engine rebuild are roughly £800. This does not include new glow plugs or overhauling the injectors.

Overhauling the injectors is another option that could improve fuel economy. An overhaul of all injectors is roughly £240. Glow plugs are another £100.

Once the gearbox is disconnected from the engine I will also replace the flywheel and clutch. Not planning on doing this again anytime soon!. If I can get a flywheel in the UK then it will be £380 but it has been out of stock for a few months. I am waiting to hear if they can get one ordered. Otherwise I am looking at a flywheel/clutch kit from Australia at around £700

Another part that could lead to poor fuel economy is the turbo. It could be that it is past its best but I haven’t noticed any change in the turbo. An original turbo can be bought for about £500.

Adding all this up I am looking at around £2500 if no professional help (engine shop) is required. By no means does it mean that all these parts need, or will be changed.. It is more a worst case scenario.

Can anybody think of any other parts I missed or any other reason that fuel economy is so poor? (Brakes are not binding and the tyre pressure is correct)

Parts list for the engine minus a couple of seals but is also includes a brake master cylinder and front wheel hub bearing kit.

Watch this space I have today started to get the head off mine, The cam shaft is as new, but the hydraulic followers are not so good on first inspection, so I am wondering if they are holding the valves open a tad, tomorrow will tell when I get the head off, but there is no way I would be spending 2K on this motor, pics will follow, Rick

Looking forward to your updates Rick. Hopefully it isn’t too bad and you can save the engine!

I don’t really want to spend £2500 on the engine. Especially not knowing if the poor fuel economy will be solved at the same time.
