or leave a standing offer to drag burnt out cars to the nearest road for collection by the scrappie? might work wonders; was reading in the NFU mag at the weekend what landowners have to put up with in terms of paying for the cleanup....could be an interesting recovery exercise too....

well put was going to suggest similar, if access to a trailer could weigh scrap in as well.

maybe adopt lane, build bridges, could mean more not normally accessible tracks to
explore as goodwill etc.

I strongly suspect that with the right approach, most landowners would welcome any offers of this kind....you could have a periodic volunteer day doing anything from clearing rubbish (which can be taken to your local tip FOC normally, or picked up by the scrappie usually for nothing - borrow an old flatbed with a winch < a winch did he say??>) to a bit of track mending etc - latter might be an interesting challenge.

And a quick phone call to the local rag beforehand might result in some positive PR for once, especially if you took a few kids along and bumped up the environmental angle.

Sounds like the scheme GLASS already have in place. There are 2 National Green Lane days every year and they have the volunteer Lengthmens scheme under which people adopt a lane and litter pick, report problems etc. Every road in the country used to have a lengthsman paid by the local community to look after the roads but this is long gone now with centralising all public services etc.

With regard to removing scrap vehicles etc you would probably run into all the same bureauracacy as lane repairs do. Many councils won't even entertain volunteers, many of those that do insist on alsorts of stuff, Public Liability Inurance, Hi-Viz, certificates for any power tools, closing the lane for the duration of the repairs (formally with a TRO). GLASS are already doing this sort of thing and have many of the above already covered, would be best to join them and help out on an existing project which will be co-ordinated with the local council.

I don't wish to be negative but none of these are new ideas - all been done before etc and the reality is that whilst it may help retain the lanes we have already no one is suddenly going to open the gate to a whole load more.
