ive just broke down :( , temp gauge went as far into the red as it could , so i stopped quickly . , i opened the bonnet and couldnt see owt wrong , expansion bottle was half full ..... couldnt see any steam  ..... then like an idiot i removed the rad cap :doh ..... the cap shot about 30 foot into the air and covered me and the car in coolant :doh......rac man came and refilled coolant and all seemed ok . he followed me to the garage and temp gauge was normal ..... if anything it was lower than normal but not overheating .......... wtf ?

garage seem to think its the thermostat

strange thing is , its about 4 miles from where i broke down to the garage ....... and the car didnt overheat on the way to the garage ........ if anything it ran cooler

airlock?

New thermostat first, impeller could have fallen off the water pump although unlikely

yike, hot water to the face isnt fun.

glad you got it sorted mate, surprised it overheated in this weather...next time, put all your heaters on full blast into the cabin-draws a lot of heat away from the engine and keeps it cool- i drove from huddersfield to sheffield like this in mhy old MX6-faulty pump,. V6 Aluminium engine, got here fine!

heater was on full clive

Sounds like the thermostat was stuck in the closed position. That would explain the build up of pressure and high temperature reading as the coolant wasnt circulating

just got my truck back from the garage ....... seems it was indeed the thermostat ...... it had stuck in the closed position , then when the coolant boiled /got very hot ...... it then opened and stuck open ........ new stat in now ...... got a lovely warm heater now , temp normal :thumb2:thumb2

cheers chaps :thumb2

Beats me why the thermo wasn't changed the same time as the water pump :doh
Similar symptons can be from frozen water ways too. I assume you're all reloaded with antifreeze :thumbs

im hoping so

ok , truck still overheating even with new thermostat in :( , it only seems to overheat when the thermostat kicks in tho  , today i had it on tickover for about 20 mins ....... it was fine , lovely warm heater :naughty , but as soon as i give it some beans , the temp gauge started to climb , eventually just before the red ........ this was in a distance of about 2 miles . i refilled the rad with water ( once it had cooled down enough ) and it took almost 4 litres ....... sheila noticed a drip under neath the truck , but it was only a drip ....... when i got home i waited till the truck cooled down again and filled with proper coolant ( 50/50 mix ) as i poured it in it started to froth ..... sorta white froth ....... then settled down to normal ..

advice chaps ? ........ h/g failure ? ........ rad leaking ???????

i also tried ricks advice for testing h/g failure ........ but the truck only overheats when given some beans , so on tickover it seems ok .

the rad cap has a black button on it , and when the truck overheats if i press that i get a gurgling sound in the expansion tank even though its half full .... also some steam comes out of a little pipe facing the front ( overflow ? )

darent take the rad cap off when it overheats

Get a leak test done ( block test ) sounds like head gasket. Any mayonnaise on dip stick or filler cap ?

er dunno ...... will check in the morning ...... truck still hot from 30 mins ago

did they actually test the stat Pete? if it was stuck closed, then the overheating may have weakend the head gasket, but do not know enough about your engine to say, but the frothing points to HG, but hope I am wrong, Rick

i hope you are wrong too rick , but i doubt you are :bow ..... they showed me the old stat and it deffo was foofed , but was stuck open !!!

yes that is the way modern stats fail, effd if I know how but they do, so deffo HG mate so sorry, Rick

hmm, well, this is as I suspected Peter when we were chatting. Does sound like HG but its not necessarily doom and gloom. You just have to get it into a garage, and get them to have a look.

Do you still need me to pop down tomorrow? Or are you going to get it straight to the nearest garage>?
