I've just put it in a saucepan of boiling water that I measured to be 98 degrees celcius and it still wasn't fully open and was rated as an 82!!!!

and I thought these modern stats were supposed to fail safe, ie open, so much for that info, Rick

You can get away without a gasket on the water pump, just use nice thick rtv sealer blue or copper ( I use copper for everything )

Just a quick note on testing thermostats, always suspend them in the water, best not to let them touch the sides or bottom of the pan, as the metal of the pan could be much greater than the water, and if in contact, could overheat the thermostat. Just a thought...
You often see a stick across a pan, and the thermostat suspended from that.:thumb2

Ah, nice one for that Rustic, I'll bare that in mind in future, it was the scrap one anyway so I wasn't too bothered if it ruined it or not but nonetheless good for anyone wishing to carry out this test in future :thumb2
