Morning,

I run my T2 on Veg Oil from Tesco at 85p per litre plus some diesel. Bit better than the £1.07 p/l at the local garages. I don't do anything fancy to the oil, just pour it in.

If I was to use waste oil would I need to do anything else other than just strain it?

I've seen all these fan-dangled machines on ebay and the www that processes the WVO but is it really needed?

All info gratefully received.

hi
do you need to do any alterations to run on veg oil?
may be a stupid question, but thought i would ask
thanks
stefan

it's a bit more involved than just straining the oil, i know someone who makes his own bio diesel and you have heat it, strain it through micron filters, and add chemicals etc, just stick with the cooking oil for now, see if you can locate a bio-diesel supplier in your area. :thumb2

i've run our truck on straight cooking oil and it was ok, during the winter i run it 50/50 though, at the moment im on bio-diesel & 100% and it seems to run fine.:thumb2

Cheers Tezzer. Tried looking for Bio suppliers only found one locally but never return calls and email so I don't think they are in business any more.

You can run on WVO without doing the full conversion to Bio but you do need to strain it - filter it would be a better term as just running it through mess or bit of cloth to get the big stuff ot isn't enough. You also need to dry it as there will be a fairly high water content. This si done by settling the water out whilst heating it gently (to thin the oil).

I see some of the WVO that comes into the plae I buy Bio and when you see whats in it and the way some of it turns solid when the temperature even dips to single figures let alone below zero, you'd not be so confident about putting it in your car.

Sure people do it but to do it properly needs a proper set up. If I had a corner of a barn somewhere to set up I probably would but the mess and set up expense just don't warrant it at the moment for me. Not when I an but duty and VAT paid Bio at 91.9p/L - its all going up with another duty rise though folks.

I run mine on diesel from work at 88p or from the SVO station just down the road at 86p :D

Recycled SVO is heated & strained, not a simple DIY job :thumbs

I dived in and went 100% SVO with no problems :thumbs

No modifications needed :thumbs

the guy i know who was making his own bio-diesel (he's a chef) was getting plenty of waste oil from his contacts, but now he is buying bio @ 1000lts at a time as it's far easier and cheaper than making his own, at this time he is paying 0.60p per lt delivered, and im running on it ok, only problem is it goes up and down with the price of crude oil. :naughty

Bio is relatively easy to make. But speaking with a large scale producer and a methanol producer I would question if it was worth the risk diy :nenau

Back on topic...............

You can run the terrano on svo with no mods. Perhaps for the colder weather a small heater pre pump and consider something like millers (£7 from my local factor and last a while) to clean and up the cetane a tad.

I practised for 10 000 miles what I preach with no problems at all except a chip shop smell behind me. I tried all variances of mix from 100% diesel to 100%svo with no problems or noticeable differences

Theoretically theres no reason why that wont work on prepared wvo.

However research (not experience) suggest giving WVO a miss. Its a different ball game.

Essentially the logic behind that advice which I was given from several sources is that filtering is a pain, separating is a pain and even then you could well end up with more h2o content as well as animal fats in the finished product.

Both are elements you could do with avoiding over the miles so again it comes to a cost saving v's risk to truck calculation.

Far better off beg steal or borrow a makro card (shouldnt be a problem via your place!!) which will give you a consistent source of svo around 75p a litre. Thats a decent balance between cost, risk and hassle :thumb2

I run mine on diesel from work at 88p

well unless youre going to invite us in thats irrelevant to the question asked really isnt it. Still quite a bit more expensive than svo too

or from the SVO station just down the road at 86p :D

SVO station ? wtf is that? it sounds like a dragons den enterprise and again more expensive than other sources.

Recycled SVO is heated & strained, not a simple DIY job :thumbs

Its actually very easy , the kit costs and it takes time.

I dived in and went 100% SVO with no problems :thumbs

So why do you still use diesel (as stated above) especially when its more than the svo to buy?

My daughter would say you sound like a very confused bunny. I'm not usually as polite.

No modifications needed :thumbs

You may not say that during winter. I presume you havent used 100% svo at a lower ambient temp due to your shorter term ownership ?

well my astra van has now done 155k and the last 25 of thast has been on veg oil thats been filtered etc and then they add caustic soda and meths (apparentley).

I pay 80p per litre and hand on heart the van loves it and if I put it back on diesel I know the difference and would say its better on the veg oil.

Your more than welcome.! Do you want directions.!

SVO station ? wtf is that? it sounds like a dragons den enterprise and again more expensive than other sources.

Well,it is what it says it is & cheaper than the pump prices for people that cant access makro.!

Its actually very easy , the kit costs and it takes time.

If it was that easy everyone would be doing it.!
The reason why people don't do it is the fact that it is pointless...

So why do you still use diesel (as stated above) especially when its more than the svo to buy?

Because of the hours i work & convenience.!

My daughter would say you sound like a very confused bunny. I'm not usually as polite.

Not confused & seeing as you always pick at my posts, why be polite.?

You may not say that during winter. I presume you haven't used 100% svo at a lower ambient temp due to your shorter term ownership ?

Obviously not seeing as this is my 1st diesel & have only owned it for 3 months so its not to hard to figure out that i haven't used it in the winter.!

But

Like oil,use thicker in the summer & thinner in the winter...

daved, reading your comments towards adz, it looks to me if you have a problem with him, if you have would'nt be more polite to "pm" him and have a word that way instead of airing your probs on here?, if it's because he has only been on here a few months and is now a mod, then you should contact bat21, but adz does get about to different venues and that can only be good for the club, and he's willing to get involved, and help people.

and before anyone starts im not having rant, just trying to nip a problem in the bud.:thumbs

Dont have a particular problem with him , just pointing out that his comments on this thread are half cocked, contradictory and not particularly useful. They muddy an already interestingly confusing area.

Theres an old saying about those who've walked the walk as well as talked the talk.

I'll let you work out which I consider him to be in whilst I point out my philosophy of practicing what I preach by my lack of comment on say the intercooler thread where I know very little whilst he is quite clearly at home handing out relevant (key word there) advice.

Your more than welcome.! Do you want directions.!

yes

SVO station ? wtf is that? it sounds like a dragons den enterprise and again more expensive than other sources.

Well,it is what it says it is & cheaper than the pump prices for people that cant access makro.!

not particularly enlightening!

The reason why people don't do it is the fact that it is pointless...

As opposed to spurious large blue comments please explain properly

Not confused & seeing as you always pick at my posts, why be polite.?

Your posts are self contradictory. You say you are 100% svo then say you buy diesel. Thats just one example  I will question every point I see that I know or believe to be bollox. However I am generally very polite and do accept when I am wrong.

Your posts particularly on this thread dont suggest in any way I'm wrong. Not by the substance of them anyway.

Obviously not seeing as this is my 1st diesel & have only owned it for 3 months so its not to hard to figure out that i haven't used it in the winter.!

Yes I did figure that, thats how I knew you were talking bollox again. If you want to run svo during the winter you do need to modify. You intimate an expertise and knowledge wayyyyy above whats there from you on this topic.

For your info svo and diesel are often not entirely miscible depending on volume and ambient temp. Therefore you must consider that you need the ability to run on nigh on 100% all the time inc winter. You simply do not get thinner or thicker consistency give or take a very small degree of latitude.

Sorry to be blunt but (thats polite) but you did say.

would'nt be more polite to "pm" him and have a word that way

I have not attacked him personally in the post you refer to. i have commented on poor info. That needs airing.

if it's because he has only been on here a few months and is now a mod, then you should contact bat21,

I have absolutely no idea why on earth that would even remotely come into it :confused: Its a bit of an insult tbh that you think I would be remotely worried about that. Is there some other agenda here that you are involved in :confused::confused:

I've just had a look and as far as I can see he moderates only one area, which I have no involvement in whatsover.

So playing that card to be frank is a bit sad. Please explain why you did, why it even came to mind?

Nothing at all personal, I'm just a bit taken aback.

Well said Tezzer:thumbs

We should all be allowed to air our views without having a go at anyone:)
