So I tackled the pitman arm today and it came off a dream :D :thumb2

I nicked the one side off with the angle grinder as close as I could get to the splines on the other side without actually going through. Once I'd done this I started to heat up the splines and the flat cut edge of the pitman arm up with a butane lamp for about 5 mins, then I doused it all in WD40 and while the garage went up in a steam of penetrating fluid evaporating, I gave it three almighty whacks with the lump hammer and off it came :sly

Pete you are the man!!!!!!

I've just been out and offered the steering box up to the car and I don't see any need to chop it at all, once fitted it's not going to stick out any further than my drivers side one.

Thus you can keep all the original caps and create a liquid tight seal to refill with fluid, i might potentially run a breather from it and also tap a drain and fill plug :naughty

The little blighters need trimming with the angle grinder

Thinking on it more the fact that there are 2 sets of roller bearings in there means I'd better get some fluid back in to ensure the bearings dont lock up inside and seize the shaft because a few roller bearings have jumed out and jammed the mechanism up

Possible safety issue there to consider if you are considering this mod!!! If you follow any of my modifications I will not be liable for you

Or would they be greased underneath the rubber dust boot threadside?

This part is no longer needed from the other steering box so will be putting this on my steering box as mine is leaking ever so slightly, few dribbles a week.

Brucey bonus, and yes I will be servicing the O-Rings before refitting with new ones :naughty

no ps fluid only, interesting about not needing to cut the box, as it needs pacers from the chassis will the nearside tyre on full right lock not foul, Rick

Doesn't look like it will be anywhere near close to it but not sure if that has anything to do with my offset, I will be attaching tomorrow to double check

I haven't had a play with mine yet (ahem) but what is resistance like when you turn it by hand, I was thinking of trying to make mine stiff ish with a really thick grease to create a sort of damping effect :nenau

I'm not following mate? What are you trying to do?

I was wondering if the second steering box would give any resistance, acting like a damper!! :nenau
I presume there would be a slight increase in drag purely because of the increase in weight of the components?

Yeh I suppose, what got me thinking was when you said you wanted a steering damper and that hgv tram lines on motorway sometimes pull the steering on truck, I was thinking if somehow a bit of resistance could be made on second steering box it might counter it, I don't know if that is possible tho. If you leave the box intact would you be able to pack it full of grease and put it straight on or do the box internals only move when being powered by the pas pump?

The internals are largely being removed, I'll take a picture of the cylinder that comes out that has teeth on it, the long shiny shaft that you see in previous pictures also has teeth on it which are going to be chopped off. :naughty

Why take internals out and why chop teeth?
