Squeeky Spare Wheel Bracket

HA! not a request for help. Today I fixed my squeeky wheel bracket. First thing I did was the obvious, removed the wheel and greased up the bolts, removed the bracket and greased up the bolts, put it all back and the squeek was still there. so I removed the door card and found the bracket bolts, and sprayed them plus the metal around, now the squeek is gone! Next time I'll spray the wd40 through the bolts from outside, never thought of that at the time doh!:clap

Sorry Zips, I didnt take pics, typical as I normally do BUT let me describe it.

remove the rear door card, so, you have a series of clips that run all the way round the edges, first off, unscrew the single screw from the handle, DONT try and pull the handle off. Now remove the door lock lever backing plate, its clipped in so carefully use a small flat screw driver to unclip it. Now pull the door card away CAREFULLY-you may snap some of the clips, when you do this dont pull the card off, you now need to unscrew the lock pin at the top. now remove the card. What you are greet with is the rear wash wipe motor in the middle/top. Around it are various service holes etc. If you look through where the wash wipe motor is, you can see the top two bolts of the bracket, bolted through an extra peice of metal-spray them and the metal.
Now furthur down, theres a single small hole, peer through that, and you can just see the bottom two bolts, carefully spray through that also.

Thats literally all I did, give the wheel a wobble and with any luck, the squeek is gone. put the door card back on, carefully screw the lock pin back on and clip the card in place, screw in the handle and wobble your door a bit. To furthur test mine, i went for a drive round the back, no more squeeks, its like a new car.

I do wonder tho if all my efforts could have been saved by simply removing the wheel, then bracket, and spraying through the bolt holes....

There are Spot welds on the inside of the door behind the spare wheel carrier that break as my old Maverick had a squeeky carrier and after a lot of oil, grease etc found that the spot welds on a reinforcing fillet had sheared and thats what causes the squeak. Have a look when you take your door card off at the spot welds

Spray grease is clever stuff, it is a very thin liquid when sprayed so gets to the spot it's needed and then after a few seconds it thickens and forms the grease. Really good stuff for all sorts of jobs.

ive just taken the wheel off the carrire and prayed wd40 into the holes and between the skins. oh yea, also put some double sided padded sticky tape between the door and carrira.

no suqeek now, just see how long it lasts

good going, thats what I SHOULD have done first off. As for sticky pads, I didnt have any, so used copper grease instead lol, didnt make a difference untill I sprayed wd40 into the bolts.

Cars so quiet now.

Hiya

I too have the sqeeky door.

I followed the directions and ripped the trim off ... took me ages to find the sheared door welds... So.... two questions...

A) where can I find replacement trim fasteners online?
B) what is the solution to the sheared door spot welds... I have seen a post suggesting bolting through the two skins... has anyone actually done this? pictures?

I've gone to town with some WD40 so might alleviate some of the noise.

Suggestions welcome

Spare Wheel Bracket

I had a squeeky spare wheel bracket, removed the door trim and found the problem - two spot welds had broken between the door inner panel and an internal door gusset.

Oops pressed send before mentioning I drilled out the two welds and replaced with bolts/washers and nylocs1

I know this is an old post, but it seems to be the most useful of the squeaking back door ones, so probably not a bad thing bringing it back to the front, especially as it seems to be a regular occurrence..:nenau

My back door is driving me nuts, after our off roading day the other weekend, it seems to have really woken up, and wants to be heard, loud and clear.

Even my wife, who used to drive a Fiesta, so is immune to rattles and squeaks, is complaining, so it must be really really bad...:lol

So, Clivvy and Zippy656, have you had to do any further remedial work to your squeak since this post, or has it gone for good, do I just invest in a spray grease, and fill up the read door?

I have the trim off at the moment, and yesterday, I took the spare wheel and carrier off, cleaned everything up, greased the bolts, fitted nice big silicone coated rubber washers between the carrier and body under each of the bolts, oh and did a great job of cleaning the rear wheel up at the same time (Seems a shame to cover it over now), but when I shut the door, it still squeaks. I have found with the door locked open, and a bang on the spare wheel, I can sometimes make it do it, so am happy it is not the locks etc, but did grease them up, just to be safe.

If I take some pictures of the back door, sans cover, could anyone point to the location of the problem welds?

I have had a look for dodgy welds, but cant actually see any, although, some seem to be pretty impossible to get near, but all the ones I can see or feel, are good and solid.

I had the same problem, and in my case the two lower welds of the reinforcing bracket had broken. Drilled them out, two M6 nuts & bolts fitted, squeak never came back - that was over a year ago.
As the drilling is done with the door card removed, the nuts & bolts cannot be seen once the card has been refitted.

This must be the stuff that the place where I used to get my caravan serviced insist on spraying on every exposed thread and all over any surrounding areas, so that it helpfully sticks to your hands and clothes just before you set off on your journey

I am convinced it is a con just to make you think they have done the work, perhaps that's why the left the tops off the battery last time. This is why I don't bother with the servicing anymore.
