hi guys,

thought I might start trying to figure out where my little oil leak is coming from! Basically, its not a big leak - I don't have any drips on the drive worth bothering about although oil is settling on the cross member below the gear box. As far as I can tell, its coming out of the oil sump - but I cant be 100% sure. I did nip up a couple of bolts a few months ago, and I get the impression it only leaks a little when driving - I don't appear to be losing engine oil, all the gears work good and I have no nasty noises. I cant really tell if its the transfer box either.

Here are some photos, can anyone advice me how to proceed with this diagnosis?

many thanks!

Have you checked around the top of the engine, look around the back of the engine.
Defo not derv/ veg oil is it, could be your leak off pipes from the injectors :nenau

that's the thing - top of engine is good, cant see anything so I don't think its from injectors/pipes etc..!:nenau

have you checked the oil filter? i know its on the other side but oil likes to travel so you cant find where its coming from

I have this exact issue mate and as a temporary measure to stop it dripping on the drive I've brought a £3 tesco baking tray and cable tied it to the ARB and bumper to catch the drips :lol

I've had it on for about 5 months now and it's only just under 1\4 full and its a tiny tray

Mine is my lower crankshaft oil seal, not sure how big of a job that is :nenau

When I had the clutch done on my 2.7, my mate found the gearbox seal was leaking and I had to buy a new front seal, he said when he broke the box from the engine, he got covered in oil :augie.
Could be your problem :nenau

Id give it a good dose of degreaser and jet wash it off then monitor where the oil is coming from
Other than that look upon it as rust protection

could well be, I just cant tell. I suppose I really should do the gearbox oil and xfer box oil just to make sure there is plenty still in there!

Whats the fix for that then, gearbox out/open to slip in a new seal??

done that a couple of times, what you see in the photos is how it ends up again - never seems to get worse though...

yup - not that unfortunately, I suspect sump, gearbox or transfer box....just don't know for sure or what to look for...

Check out the rear of the rocker box cover, as a leak here runs down to the gearbox.
if it is here, then maybe an "o" ring has been lost when adjusting the tappets.

This is what the Ford garage did to my Mav, when doing a routine service...:doh:doh

I will double check - but I THINK that's ok....!??! will let you know...!

If it is that seal, you will need to drop the box, may as well fit a new clutch while it's out. Check your gearbox oil level, if your having to top up, then it point at the seal.

righto - im not sure how to check it but I assume remove the filler nut and poke something in there?

any suggestions for the type of oil to use?

Remove the filler plug and you should get oil oozing out, if not, you need to top it up with GL4 type gear oil until it flows out, refit the plug and drive it. Check it in a few days, if it's low, you have found the problem Clive.

ok, more photos. Taken from above starter motor - I noticed a larger concentration of oil, and its focused between there and between the oil sump and gearbox - where it runs along the lower half of the gearbox...

I don't know if this is old or leaking from somewhere, but it appears to be that area running down and making quite the mess - so its hard to trace!
