Remove the filler plug and you should get oil oozing out, if not, you need to top it up with GL4 type gear oil until it flows out, refit the plug and drive it. Check it in a few days, if it's low, you have found the problem Clive.

GL4, right ill get some bought before I start messing. Thanks very much for your advice so far.

after looking again today (just done a 75 mile round trip) its no worse than normal, but could see its definitely focussed between sump and gearbox, but also seems to be coming from higher, above the starter maybe, near the oil dip stick perhaps, but seems higher than that....

ok, did some more prodding and poking this afternoon. Gave the lower part of the engine, drivers side, as good a clean as I could (removed the I/C to do it)

Firstly, I think my I/C has a leak, both corners at the back/underneath

Second, I broke a bolt - I decided to see how tight the head bolts were and the first was loose then snapped, the second was loose so just nipped up and stopped what I was doing before I made it worse:

is this anything to worry about? I cant see any oil leaking out from there, but I wanted to see if the bolts were tight, and they didn't feel like they were, I only did the front two.

I also have a slight leak somewhere from the thermostat housing that the thermostat sits, I cant tell if its that, or the pump but it runs along the line where the housing sits on top of the pump/block? Its minute, but there, and runs right down to the bottom of the engine.

still none the wiser about the suspect oil leak, though looking down towards the starter at the top of the oil sump, that's caked in oil and I really need to get that clean asap...

So are you saying the bolt you snapped was a rocker cover bolt? Rather than a head bolt.
Also previous link to photos shows top edge of the plate on the side of the block that the manual refers to as an oil cooler. Remover that's the one I had problems withe because of the numpty that changed my starter.

Thermostat housing is common failure due to the newer ones being plastic best get one from older model in aluminuim

ah yes, rocker cover bolt mate sorry! is that not so bad then?

I did think it was a similar issue to yours Jim, but I thought yours was coolant leaking? Do you think its the same for me, except its mixing with old oil on its way down perhaps? That said, oil leak looks higher up that I thought your oil dip stick bracket was>?

sorry CNC, I am not sure of the name but its not the thermostat housing, its the part that the thermostat fits into, and the housing bolts on top. I have already replaced the housing from plastic to metal due to a previous leak, and also re drilled two of the bolt holes and heli-coiled - the coolant leak appears to be coming form somewhere in the middle as you look directly at it, under the wires and bolts where you cant see - I can see coolant seems to run along the seam where the thermostat housing/block bolts onto the pump...if that makes sense?

anyone know what this is (circled in green) and where it goes??

Is that the sump?

yup, that's the oil sump for the 2.7 tdi. I haven't noticed that tube-like thing poking up on mine (im sure its there) and I don't know what it is, but as I have some mystery leak, its worth me checking it for leaks...

It's just a guess but it looks like that's where the dip stick tube goes?

Clive mine leaks from the joint near the sump plug check there it has the same symptoms. Hope this helps. Kev

ok, I will take a look - though which joint do you mean, the lower joint below the plug?

can anyone give me some more clues?

been having a look underneath again today, and after a clean up it seems the oil is leaking from between the sump, and the lower part of the engine area - it looks like some oil is on the underside of the starter motor, its then leaking down the back of the oil sump, not the side with the sump plug, the other side.

I checked the sump bolts and they all seem tight, that area upwards is covered in old oil but new oil has leaked down after a few miles drive.

I just cant pin point exactly where it is coming from. There appears to be something next to the sump near the starter with oil on it but I don't know what it is...?!

Can I assume then, that all Terranos have some sort of leak in one form or another? Something that you have to live with.

yes. Absolutely!

but then you fix them and all is well.

crankshaft seal on mine:(
will get it done at the same time as clutch and maybe gearbox change or lay shaft bearing fix:eek:
