Now I've fixed the leaking exhaust :augie and a careful, not neccesarily light, right foot using 50% plus svo I'm easily getting 30mpg on mixed driving:thumb2

Totally chuffed :clap

I'll be interested to see if wiring the heater in (hopefully tomorrow) increases efficiency and therefore mpg :nenau

Just thinking about oils & fuel as i done me Mavs oil & filter today ready for the weekend...
In some of me performance cars i usded to use different oil in the winter (thin) & in the summer (thicker)
Would this help a diesel engine the same.?

Interesting guys,
I never used the solvent, I just put in a table spoon of white spirit in each tank full.

I have not ran my 3.0 T2 on SVO.

Although I ran my Trooper 3.1td on a 70/30 svo/diesel mix, my escort and fiesta ran on 100% mix, the ford 1.8d engine had more power and better mpg on the veggie oil, also don't worry about emmisions on MOT time, sail straight through.

The Trooper would not run with a >70% svo, even with a fuel heater I fitted.
The best diesel pumps for svo are German ones.
Alot of Jap pumpsjust carn't cut the mustard, although I see above someones running on hundred percent svo, ( bet you can't in winter!)

Just one more thing running on svo, you need to keep on top of your fuel filter, once I was getting some pure un- refined rape oil, not only was it a bit thick, but within a month I had a "green gunk" inside the filter.

I have tried allsorts of weird and wonderful additives, best thing is to keep it simple, do things gradual.

If your using 3lt bottles from the supermarket, pour it straight in ,say 1/2 tank diesel, you will see you cannot fully drain the bottle, I had a 20lt drum which i stood the "near" empty bottle upside down to drain while I pour another 3lt into the tank, then jump on the fully drained bottle, screw the lid back on and stick it in your recycle bin.
It's amazing how much dregs you will collect off 15 bottles.

One more thing, don't constantly drive like- "Driving Miss Daisy" if so after 5-10k miles you will start to gum up abit, this a by-product from running on SVO, it's a coating that builds up on the exhaust side of the combustion, not a problem if you give her a bit of stick now again.

I'm no expert, but I have been veggie-ing for quiet a while. :)

Trying for the second time in a bit (with some more tools) the oil filter is a bit of a bugger to get to!

Changed oil filter yesterday, wheel arch seems the best way. Turn wheels to off side, remove
part of wheel arch rubber cover (just pull clips) and there it is........ must admit I had to use chain wrench to start it.

I did discover that there are three different filters for the t2. Pre 1996 non intercooler,
Post 1996 tdi and the 3.0l, so make sure you have the correct one, compare with the one you remove. regards bri

Well...
Mine with just diesel, average speed, driving & towing,is doing about 375 miles on a full tank.!
With 50% diesel & 50% Sunflower Oil,it just scrapes over 400 miles with same driving style.!
My personal conclusion for my 2.7TD SWB is it is more economical with the 50/50 mix which i put down to the extra oil.!?

So

Other peoples thoughts on this.?

How does that translate into actual mpg Adz? Obviously 'tankful' is a relative term....:thumbs

No what I mean is, 'a tankful' doesn't really tell me how many litres you used? Your float might say empty at a different point to mine - for example I can easily get over 400 miles to a tankful but I know that equates to a not very good mpg cos I drive like a nutter, and how far into the warning light do you drive....it easily has 15 litres when that light comes on.

and where are you getting diesel at 86p a litre!!!!???????

also, where do you buy your SVO?:):):)

so many questions!!

Hi folks, back from a cider and svo fuelled jaunt to the South west :thumb2

Cider for me and KTC oil for the T2.

We've done 1054 miles in total on 100% svo with millers added at 1 measure per 20l of svo. Ran as sweet as and whilst I havent factored in the millers the bottle lasts ages and costs £7, KTC svo from makro is £15 for 20 litres. A massive saving on the current price of diesel down there ranging from 102.9p up to 110.9p per litre

I havent bothered keeping details to work out the mpg this trip but it was "as normal" .

When I have measued down to the last drop in the past both towing and solo, there minimal difference in consumption and varies between mixes with 50/50 coming out best sometines , 100% svo the others. Too close to call when you havent been measuring things like your laden weight or wind direction and speed :augie (now that'll get some thinking :D )

Quick question dj.........when youve submitted your veggie maching for Mot , have you put it through with SVO, diesel or a mix?

Cheers

what you didnt call in!

oh well Ill take the kettle off then

SVO is 5 mins down the road :augie

I'll get back to you on the litres...
Although...
It normally takes 65 litres to fill it as i wont run till the light comes on ;)

how come so cheap then

Because his a Haulage Company & runs more than 15 lorrys,he buys it by the tanker load.
Bearing in mind all our lorrys have twin over sized fuel tanks...
Each lorry can hold about 90 gallons...
I normally fill up once a fortnight, the artic fills up every week.!

Jammy sod! at 65 ltrs you've still got 15 litres in the tank or a good 70-80 miles.......I once ran mine up to 465 miles (while crapping myself) trying to get back from southern France for the ferry on a bank holiday when EVERYTHING was shut...eventually had to knock some old guy in a tiny little gas station, luckily I had four kids on board and being French it was 'family first'!

Sorry :bow Next month ok? I'm in Wiltshire cant remember where though :doh off to see the Green Machine at one of their training places

Glad you had a good time dave - sorry I didn't get down, had to go down early to sort a little domestic crisis and ended up breaking an alternator belt and throwing the power steering pump belt on the Merthyr bypass :doh

Still, definitely trying to make the 8th Aug beach party!
