well i'm sticking to my starter theory :lol

its the exact same symptoms i had and it was the starter, even down to the lights

*whistles and puts fingers in ears* i really hope not.

With the lights off was the cranking much better? (As mine is?)

Surely that would have meant you had both issues?

yes it was, would even jump start from a second car that had its engine running, i changed battery and no change, changed the starter and fine, i even put the old battery back on and it still started fine

Wait a min. The proof has been mentioned, a jumper cable, one from positive and one to starter motor :thumb2

problem is when you are trying to diagnose from here you do not have the full picture,,if it was here in my workshop then loads of other things would come into play, like how dose the starter/engine sound, is there any sisling from bad connections quick test of battery terminals for heat, it is a long list of items that you hit on straight away with hands on, Rick

alexd333 you are in the right place at work to get thing's sorted if they can fix jag's terrano's should be no problem mate good luck :thumbs

Yes very true, the only issue it getting it there :doh

Where is this starter motor bit i need to plug to?

Does that mean i can run the positive off the spare battery to the starter motor with ignition turned on (coils warm on normal battery ect)

Edit: i also like gathering info here at the guys on this forum have been there and got the t shirt when it comes to terranos. The techs are v good at jag, but they don't know the common symptoms ect.

Whoops big clanger, no as said before battery goes direct to motor if connections good then jumper will not work, now jumper battery neg to engine, now we are talking,Rick

Ive gotta go to bed now :( you think I should try battery negative to engine, with a jumper cable yes?

Thanks all for your input (hope I'm not starting world war 3 on here) :lol

Goodnight all.

Goodnight all.

yes it eliminates all the other earth connections, in one fell swoop, just make sure the lead is heavy enough and has good connections at both ends, Rick

What I'm worried about here is that Alex may actually cause him self some real problems. Alex is full of enthusiasm and is obviously very keen to learn. Running thick cables direct from the battery makes a cracking welder!!! I was and still would be very cautious about doing this, personally I think it is a two man job to hold leads on to the battery and starter. Remember that a battery will also emit gases when being discharged as well as charging and they will still be a risk of explosion.

Alex be very careful and don't get hurt, safety is everything. Speak to the techs from work and see if you can get one of them to nip to your place with you and run the jump leads direct perhaps.

VERY SOUND ADVICE THERE

starter motor is my thoughts to

starter motor i say i know the earths can cause a problem but as we all know these are big engines they need a good cranking to get them started ours went gave symtoms of battery or poor earth

fitted a new starter motor and no problem since iv seen your motor it is very tidy but does seem to have a few teething problems which you shouldnt have to pay for, i found your leaky clutch master cylinder which rick replaced for you the clutch was faulty when you test drove it, the starter could also have been on its way. i still reckon you contact the dealer and see if you can get some money back from him for all the parts if nothing else
