so whats with my gear oil on the bottle it says ep75w90 hypoid gear oil semi-synthetic (can be used for 75w90, 75w80, and 75w85 recommendation) and specification API gl-4, gl-5 its made by carlube is the oil safe to use :nenau

I thought it was 80-90 GL4 - that's what the Comma site recommended for me. Just want to check as I was planning to change this at the weekend if the rain could do the decent thing and hold off long enough! Now worried I've got the wrong oil in

R u doing rear diff or gearbox :nenau

Bleeding the old gal dry all round! :lol

The oil I mentioned has been bought for the gearbox alone, got some LS80-90GL5 for the rear diff and EP80-90GL5 for the front diff.

Transfer box, hmmm, I forgot to buy anything for that!

GL5 in the front diff is right isn't it??

According to my owners manual the transfer box oil should be:

GL4 75 w90 or 80 w90

that's for outside temperatures of minus 30 to plus 40 degrees Centigrade

and it's straight from the Nissan Terrano owners manual :thumb2

This comes out of my ford maverick hand book

Fluids

Transmission: ESD-M2C-175-A

Transfer box: ESD-M2C 166-H

Front diff: SQM-2C 9002-AA

Rear diff: SQM-2C 9002-AA

PAS: SQM-2C 9002-AA

This is what I was on about in another thread where the manufacturer of oil cannot be in a position to recommend oils for certain vehicles.

The Manufacturer of the vehicle states the specification of the oil :thumbs

arrgghhh!! so what oil for where? I used Comma's site 'cos everyone says use Comma's oils :doh

Anyone got Nissan's definitive list for a mk1?

There is nothing wrong with comma oils as long as it is the specified oil for the application.

If the vehicle manufacturer says the gearbox should have 75W 90 GL-4 then you shouldn't be putting a different oil into the gearbox recommended by the oil company. They may call it SX Gear oil .... but does anyone know what specification SX is :nenau

If they do please tell me because that's what the garage who changed my gearbox has put in

My Nissan workshop manual for MKII lists for both TD2.7 and ZD30

Gearbox and Transfer box API-GL4

Front Diff API-GL5

Rear diff (No LSD) API-GL5
Rear diff (LSD) LSD gear oil API GL-5 and SAE 80W-90

Clarifies the SAE as "For cold and warm areas: 75W-90 for transmission and 80W-90 for differential carrier are preferable." and "For hot areas: 90 is suitable for ambient temperatures below 40°C (104°F)"

Thanks apgphoto.

So it seems I have the right oils for both front and rear diff's but slightly thick oil for the gearbox. Hmmmm, old unknown gearbox oil or 80-90 instead of 75-90, what's the likely impact of the thicker oil - tougher gear selection?

That is assuming they mean gear box and transfer box by the word transmission.

Clarity, is that what you become when you spill red wine down yer front??

I put thicker 80w 90 in my gearbox to try to shut it up and make it last longer in the last few months of its life:( It did work to a certain degree.

I don'r know what the impact of using a thicker oil is - I did notice sometimes it was harder to get into gear but apart from that I don't know..... I suppose if it had oil throwers like a compressor then that would be an issue - maybe someone here will know :nenau

Personally I prefer to use molyslip, rather than thicker oil.:clap

I'm gonna get some gl4 fluid for mine as I have a funny feeling it's probably gl5 thats in it:rolleyes::doh:(

Gearbox oil saga goes on

O.K - how many of us went about the task of changing the gearbox oil in our Terranos after the GL-5 horrors? :D I will tell you about my day - you will never believe it!!

I purchased a 5 Litre container of Comma 75W 90 GL-4 gear oil on Friday and confirmed with the manual that the gear box takes 3.5 Litres of the stuff. :thumb2

This morning ( Sunday ) I drained the gearbox and too my horror alot more oil came out than what I would have concidered to be 3.5Litres ???? . As I had only counted on 3.5 Litres , the container over flowed resulting in panic panic panic, I dropped the plug into the container - oil everywhere and a nice big oil stain on my drive. :doh My next thoughts were that somehow the garage who had replaced the gearbox had been incompetent and over filled my gearbox.

I went about the task of refilling the gearbox, I found the best way is to put a funnel into one end of a pipe ( clear fuel pipe I used ) - put the pipe through the drivers door handle so that the funnel is held upright by the door handle. The other end of the pipe goes between the box section and floor - straight into the filler at the side of the gearbox. ;)

Glug glug 1Ltr glug glug 2Ltrs glug glug glug ......... 5ltrs later and no oil comming from the level / filler hole at the side of the box :eek::eek::eek::eek:

In my utter dismay I went into the house to look at the manual on my puter as by now I had started to doubt myself that somehow I was only supposed to put 3.5Litres into the gearbox and the level hole thing did not apply to the gearbox:nenau

After covering my PC keyboard and mouse with dirty oil prints and grit from my drive that fell out of my hair - I found the section which shows the level of oil level with the filler hole so I was not going out of my mind.

I had to go to Halfords as they were the only place open on a Sunday and luckily they sold the same comma 75W 90 GL-4 so I had too buy single 1Litre containers at a price which makes one cringe at the till  I had a quick look through the reference book as to which oil Halfords recommend and it says 80W 90 Gl-4!!
Whilst paying for my oil I made a comment to the vacant teenager behind the till about my discovery that their reference guide had an inaccuracy to which he never even raised an eye brow, to say his interest in what I had to say was parallel with my interest in Ndubz or Lenny cohen.... basically he did not give a rats ar$e :(

Returning to my wifes much loved Skoda I thought that someone had malisiously broken in and soiled the drivers head rest with a horrible black substance ... this is when I realised that despite changing back to good clothes to go to Halfords - I had been walking through Halfords with a splodge of horrible thick oil on the back of my head which I had picked up off my drive whilst crawling around under my truck !!! :(:eek:

On returning home I found it took half a litre of this oil and then oil stared comming out of the level hole ..... spent half an hour looking for the filler plug which I had somehow kicked over to the other side of the drive behind the back wheel - thats 5.5litres :(

Phew!! job done :clap

ffs! What T2 do you have? Slightly glad I didn't get started this weekend after all!!

I've heard of covering yourself in glory..... :lol

As you have such vast experience now can you do mine? - Only joking! Where are the filler and level holes? I haven't even got that far yet. Did you end up using Comma sx75-90 GL4? that was the only one I could see on their site that met the 75-90 requirement.

Hope you got the Skoda cleaned up, I would have been laid to rest under the garden shed if that was me!!
