Recently my terrano seems to smell like gear oil, more when my dad drives it coz he drives really fast:rolleyes:, there seems to be a little leak on the rubber boot on the gearbox where the gearstick goes into the box but nothing major. Any ideas? Ill get pics of what I mean tomorrow if I remember:doh if you drive steady, there's no smell

Just done this job today.

Most probably it is - as I found comming from the base of the gearstick.

The large rubber cover should be pushed down over the round metal flange and the groove around the flange should now be exposed.

The gaiter at the bottom of the gearstick has a raised bottom edge which you can feel if you put a finger up inside it. That raised part locates into the groove in the top of the flange.

My gaiter has holes in it which I repaied with tiger seal - no smell now :D

Thanks, I thought I'd need to to to a Nissan main stealer to get one:eek::doh

just a thought! are you sure you have the right oil? as GL5 has a lot more of a sulphorous smell than GL4.

Good point but GL4 does smell quite a bit too.

Yes - GL5 is a definate No No for Terrano gearboxes - it will destroy them!!

GL5 is so common, and most people are so ignorant of the difference (GL4 only for gearboxes with no yellow metal components!) that most just use GL5 anyway. I think at one time GL4 was quite common and has become less common. Your average mechanic seems to think that GL5 is better and will do both, in the same way you can replace DOT 3 with DOT 4 brake fluid. It is not better it is just different!

With this in mind, I think the reputation T2's gained for 'weak' gearboxes is down to them regularly being abused with the wrong oil! I know a clutch and gearbox specialist that only uses GL5 (and keeps no LSD oil) and is adamant that these differences don't matter and they work on hundreds of cars a week

so my advice to anyone with a 'noisy' T2 box is to change the oil ASAP to slow down the process of damage!

Christ:eek: I dread to think what the mechanic put in mine then:doh, I don't really like him, put it this way, he changed the gearbox in my t2 and when he built it back together, he only put 1 bolt in the starter motor. So it came loose at tesco carpark and wouldn't engage on the flywheel. I Had to jam my hand in and attemp to hold the starter against the flywheel so it started.:hmh

From Wikipedia -

API GL-4. Oils for various conditions - light to heavy. They contain up to 4.0% effective anti-scuffing additives. Designed for bevel and hypoid gears which have small displacement of axes, the gearboxes of trucks, and axle units. These oils are standard for synchronized gearboxes, especially in Europe, and may also be recommended for non-synchronized gearboxes of US trucks, tractors and buses and for main and other gears of all vehicles. GL-4 oils may also be used in many limited-slip differentials.

API GL-5. Oils for severe conditions. They contain up to 6.5% effective anti-scuffing additives. The general application of oils in this class are for hypoid gears having significant displacement of axes, generally non limited-slip differentials. They are recommended as universal oils to all other units of mechanical transmission (except synchronized gearboxes specifying GL-4). Some GL-5 oils in this class, which have special approval of vehicle manufacturers, can be used in synchronized manual gearboxes. API GL-5 oils can be used in limited slip differentials only if they correspond to the requirements of specification MIL-L-2105D or ZF TE-ML-05. In this case the designation of class will be another, for example API GL-5+ or API GL-5 LS.

so my terrano has got the wrong oil in it:nenau if it's ep90 or gl4

EP90 is the wrong oil for the gearbox :doh

75W 90 GL5 is the wrong oil for the gearbox :doh

75W 90 GL4 is the correct oil to use :thumb2

Note GL5 is used in most applications except synchronized gearboxes specifying GL-4

cheers, i know what to get now:D:D:bow:bow

I think this thread is a brilliant example of the fantastic club we are members of, how a topic develops and adds value to the original question. And of how well we do things regardless of age etc.

Well done to us :)

I only know these things because I've made most of these mistakes myself before :doh

Sounds like the mechanic :augie or what ever you call him will have put in any old oil, do your self a favour and drain it out asap, then refresh with GL4 type gear oil.
I'm sure that when I had my clutch done on my last terrano and the guy found the front oil seal leaking, he filled it with GL5 and after approx 1 year and 4k to 5k, the gears where starting to whine:(
