Project still ongoing. :augie

There has been a slight change of plans. After cleaning up the chassis more and more bad patches came to the surface. Not impossible to repair but I would almost end up with a new chassis.

Been in contact with a local breaker who supplied another chassis which needs no welding, just a good clean and some paint. After looking at the cost implications it was a lot cheaper to buy the 'new' chassis instead of buying materials to weld the old one back together.

It will be delivered this week and then I can start prepping the 'new' chassis.

Photo's to follow soon.

Brilliant solution, you can turn the chassis over and waxoyl inside it, it will be a good idea to use some penetrating oil on all those bolts that attach to the old main chassis, long before to try to undo them.

You can renew the brake pipes, fuel pipes etc while you are at it.

Everything will be alligned ready to bolt the body on, but do check just in case the chassis isn't parallel any more, do a corner to corner measurement between the body mounting points.

Do you know why the car was originally written off?

:clap :thumbs

( don't forget the picys or you'll have zippy onto you )

Just a thought, check the "new" one over before you pay as many breakers just hack every thing off with a gas torch, and many times cut more than they should, but otherwise a truly great project, and will be followed on here by many, please keep the pics coming, well done, you should have a really great car when finished, Rick

Rustic,
no idea why the car was written off but I will ask the breaker. I have seen the car sitting in his yard and there was no damage to the car.

Rick,
He has indeed removed the chassis with a gas torch but the front bumper, towbar and all the fuel & brake lines are still attached.

Unfortunately do to work commitments I have had to reschedule the delivery of the chassis till the weekend. :( Was looking forward to get it today but I couldn't fit it in anymore, so a few more days to wait.

In the mean time I have ordered the following for the Patrol:
-Brake pipes
-Brake pipe connectors
-Braided fuel hose from the front to the rear.
-Brake discs. (4)
-Brake pads
-Shock absorbers (4)
-Coil springs (4)
-Braided brake lines, from brake pipe to caliper
-Polybushes (all)
-Universal oil cooler
-Steering track rod ends (2)
-Anti roll bar links front (2)
-Rear Anti roll link
-Chassis paint.
-Primer
-Surface cleaner and conditioner.

A few more things need to be ordered like some seals for the front axle and possibly a new rear brake caliper, depending on the reason why its leaking.

There should be a few packages waiting for me when I get back home at the end of the week. :augie

New chassis has been delivered yesterday. Removed all the brake lines and fuel lines which were still on it and stripped it back to the bare chassis. Now removing all the rust and getting it ready for paint.

At least there is some progress. :D

looks an ideal time for lots of rust proofing, you can get black waxoyl - stand it in a bucket of almost boiling water to thin it, add a good dash of whit spirit and spray or pour it into the rails - job done :thumb2

Talk to VRO before you put any more work into it. - Very Important!!

The reason for this is because it is fine to put a NEW chassis on, but ILLEGAL to have a used chassis (they class it as 'ringing')

If you talk to them now, at this stage, they may well decide to do an inspection and re-register the vehicle - it may end up on a q plate - but would be legal.

Keep receipts and keep photos - but get advice NOW. Would hate for you to complete the work and have a vehicle that cannot be used on the road.

If they say 'no', then it may well be a case of using parts from the new one, to weld onto the old one. Just trying to save you some grief, and time!

Where is the "chassis number"? on the body or on the chassis?
or both?

that could be a good point as there is a chassis number stamped just under the drivers door and it will not match the one on the plate in the engine bay, Rick :thumb2

Dan,

I have been thinking of that. However I have cleaned the chassis today with a wire brush on an angle grinder and nowhere have I seen a chassis number on the chassis itself.

That doesn't mean that there isn't one, just that I have not been able to locate it!

If somebody can tell me where it is then that will be greatly appreciated. just been out after reading these posts and checked under the drivers door but there is nothing.

You get alot of this with old landrovers, which is why they pay £1400 for a new one, rather than picking up a better used one for £200.

Those that do, you often see being offloaded on ebay as 'Lost V5, just apply for another' or as 'Offroad use only' - because they cannot register them!

That said, with Landrovers, they were stamped on the front, which 99% have been replaced with new sections, so very few have their original stamp - but grind it out, or stamp your original one on there and you will get shot! Even a new chassis has to be left 'blank' - also, if you galvanise, it is classed as a 'modification' for insurance - something the landy owners are having problems with!

VRO work on a points sytem, chassis has MOST of the points, but they do consider the body, axles etc. You may be able to swing it, or they may q-plate.

Chassis number usually under door on chassis rail, or right front adjacent to the engine.

Dan,

Thanks for that. The strange thing is that there is NO chassis number on my old chassis and there is also NO chassis numer on the 'new' chassis. When I bought my car it was HPI checked and had (and still has) a V5.

I am not disputing what you say but as both chassis have no numbers in them, I am starting to believe that there are none on the Patrol and that the only number is on the plate in the engine bay.

But would like to know for sure before i continue.

Just wait until tomorrow, clean it up (may need sanding in places, or using a paint thinner) and check for anything! Some may be faint.

If there is nothing on either - Then you are good to go!:thumb2

(If you can't find it with the body off, no-one else will with the body on!)

My guess, and it is only a guess...
Is that the VIN/chassis number is on the body and not the sub component that the body rests on.
My be worth asking a Nissan dealer for the definitive answer, could be one of very few things you'll ever get for free from them!

Dan,

Been round the chassis with a wire brush today, cleaned it up completely so have seen every inch of the chassis but no chassis number.

I have been looking out for it as I would like to do it all legally hence why I got worried when I read your post.

But I will have a look tomorrow and will give the dealer a call to see if they no where it is supposed to be.

Thanks for your help. :thumbs

Chassis number is stamped on the chassis just to the rear of the drivers door, well it is on the four I have got, all T2 petrols 3 Mk 1s, 1 Mk 2, Rick
