A nasty surprise today. The rear chassis rail from just behind the rear axle has to be replaced. Left side is repairable but the right side preferably needs replacing.

Can somebody recommend a mobile welder in the West Sussex area?

Never done any welding myself before so want to make sure that the chassis is in good order. don't mind learning my own welding on some chassis repairs or panels but not on a part of the chassis which needs to tow 2500kg on a regular basis.

that is one ambitious DIY repair, well done for even attempting it :thumb2

west sussex ? ...... its gotta be rick and swifty :thumb2:thumb2

Where not being able to weld does delay the project a little bit. However my brother in law is a welder and he will teach me so it won't be learning on the job.

However even after passing his rigorous course I think it might be better to have somebody weld the back end together who has done it before.

Unfortunately finding the rear part of a SWB chassis seems to be slightly problematic. So in the end might have to find another way to repair what I have got.

did you have any joy comparing it to Rick's T2 chassis?

I remember you could buy land rover chassis, either galvanised or not, I just wondered if someone out there makes one already for the Patrol, my first though probably not as there aren't many about.

Another option is to find a front damaged motor.

Either way, you have an enormous project on your hands. Good luck.

Just a safety issue, on your Patrol body, are you happy that it is safe perched on those blocks, or have you lowered it?
Kids tend to crawl under things like that even though it is on private property, just a thought.

Plank,

Rick's T2 chassis is slightly different. Height is out by 10mm. However still keeping the option open and just make the T2 chassis fit. Still looking at options and been in contact with several breakers but so far no luck. Not a lot of SWB being broken.

Rustic,

The body has been lowered straight after those were taken. No way would I leave the body perched like that. Wasn't really comfortable with it in the first place but the front had to be higher so the engine fitted under the front of the chassis. It is now sits on more blocks and only 450mm of the ground.

Great thread and the best of luck with your project. Don't think i would have the balls to tackle that:bow:thumb2

hell of a project but after you finish you will know the chassis will be good for lots more years.

I've just struggled taking the wing off mine.

Just been looking at the body removal pics, think you did very well there if all you had was two bottle jacks, when I did mine we used a tree and block and tackle, there is a thread with pics of Swifty on the roof pulling the chain, how did the measurements work out re spacings, regards Rick

Yes Rick, all I had was two bottle jacks. Normally I have a digger standing around but that is out on a job so had to improvise. Far from ideal but I got the job done. Two bottle jacks and only myself to do it so took me the whole morning. Will have a look at your thread.

Have been working today so no time yet to look at the measurements. Got an early start in the morning and when I get back I will compare the measurements. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

i find it hard to belive you did all that and cant even weld the thing now you got access:D you sir, you are a loon:lol and i wish i was half as brave as you..

regards larson

Project still ongoing. :augie

There has been a slight change of plans. After cleaning up the chassis more and more bad patches came to the surface. Not impossible to repair but I would almost end up with a new chassis.

Been in contact with a local breaker who supplied another chassis which needs no welding, just a good clean and some paint. After looking at the cost implications it was a lot cheaper to buy the 'new' chassis instead of buying materials to weld the old one back together.

It will be delivered this week and then I can start prepping the 'new' chassis.

Photo's to follow soon.
