:'( :'( PUBLIC NOTICE
BYWAY CLOSED

road traffic regulation act 1984:secttion 14
EMERGENCY TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC ON PART OF
BYWAY OPEN TO ALL TRAFFIC KNOWN AS FORTY FOOT LANE
THE BEDFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL HEREBY GIVE NOTICE THAT
from the date hereof to the 21st may 2009 both dates inclusive, or until the proposed works are completed, no person shall cause any mechanically propelled vehicle or horse drawn vehicle to proceed along the following lengths of lanes:
FORTY FOOT LANE(1) (PART OF KNOTTING AND SOULDROP:BOAT No 10 and Wymington: BOAT No8)

Which extends from plain pond at (OS GR)SP 9613 6117 (MAP POINT A) for approximately 2240 metres to its junction with Public Footpath No4 Knotting and Souldrop at (OS GR) SP 9783 6255 (Map point B)
Forty Foot Lane(2)(Part of Knotting and Souldrop: BOAT No10) which extends from its junction with the UC299 Chapel Lane Souldrop at (OS GR) SP 9801 6269 (Map point c) for approximatly 475 metres to its junction with the A6 at OS GR SP 9845 6295 (MNap point D) These temporary closures are required to enable repair works to the surface of the lane and for safety reasons due to works at the Byways junction with the A6.
The closures are expected to take place from 1st May 2009 for a period of three weeks and will be followed by a Temporary Prohibition Order covering an additional period of six months.
DATED 1May 2009

Did one out our way the other day Winwick to Yelvertoft. Simple and easy was just coming back from shooting and stummbled across it.

From what I gather Bedford Borough council seem to be quite pro active on temporary closures of lanes to protect them form idiots who go mud plugging in the winter but also in repairing them. The above closure seems pretty typical. Short work period closure followed by a rest and ettle in perios so the new surface doesn't immeadiately get heavy traffic.

If only more councols would actually do what they ae actually required to by law and maintain lanes then te mud pluggers would be forced to go to pay an play sites and the antis would have alot less to cpmplain about so we'd get less permanent closures.

EDIT

Looking bac that lane and a few others in the area were closed summer 2007 (after the heavy rain and floods) so that they could drain and dry out.

I in my youth a long time ago:rolleyes:I used to ride those fortyfoots on horse.
They are prone to waterlogging there were no people in 4x4s enjoying the route only farm traffic. I should think its a real mess these days with the one of the few off road places in the area.
Its good they are looking after it:thumbs
