We can both say bad luck with the engine. I'm back from holiday as well and the search for the problem continues.....

Hi, I posted on your thread about the chip that you are using, have you tried yours without it installed, do you think its a possible cause for problems?

Nah. Chip came in later. Starting problem was there when I got the truck. Looking at valve clearances next as the head was done in the past maybe someone didn't put those bak in right.

Good luck with that bud. Worst thing is with mine is thats its a £1500 to 2k gamble. I could spend that much and might not fix it :doh

If it cost any more I would have looked at putting a RB25DET engine in instead.

Just a bugger that there are no Patrol experts knocking about here that know these trucks inside out and are used to modifying them.

True, Patrols in UK don't have many specialists. RB25? Do it now

Thats my problem though, nobody knows what there doing, easy to fit and no fabrication required but its more to do with electrical harnesses to get the fueling working and what have you.

2k to get pump done compared to 4 to 5k for the conversion I would expect. Its a close call but better the devil you know I think.

If I was in oz I would rip the engine out.

Just came back from OZ, loads of Patrols in there pump shouldn't cost that much....

so to rebuild a pump its 1.5- 2k is that what your saying?

can you get a second hand one off a breaker, must be some with mechanically buggered engines..

just out of interest the problems didn't start after a new cambelt was fitted? or maybe a timing issue, has the belt jumped a tooth?

another stab in the dark, fuel lines which run from the front to the tank, sometimes these can get tiny corrosion holes which can cause air to get in the system which will cause missing issues. These holes can be miniscule but will cause problems.. This is a lot more common than you think, check the entire length of the fuel lines but usually towards the rear, the fuel system HAS to be completely sealed..

The cost also incurrs the charge of all the other checks so nearly 1K with that and to get it off before it gets checked and fixed so was a bit of a guess. Hopefully not more!

I know what you're saying about the pump, but I'm not sure if they are the same as the shogun pumps, I know they are a bugger and not worth swapping over, something to do with the ecu, need to rebuild the original. Probably not the same as the patrol is quite a basic electronic one.

Also, the chances of getting one would be one of a quite high mileage truck so would just be a waiting game for it to go, might be lucky though you never know, I could ask about...

Timing was checked also, and with that a new belt will also be going back on.
I'm sure fuel lines were checked but I will double check with them again to go through them all just in case.
Pump timing was said to be very low but just in tolerance, he turned the timing up and he said it started easier but problem remained.

have the injectors been tested ?

Injectors were the first thing to get checked and all said to be working fine with regards to flow but injector 1 had the sensor not working.

Got a new injector with the sensor and problem remained although I'm sure it was running better though, but now much much worse, so wondering if related as the pump and injector obviously work together.

do you get ANY white smoke, has the crank position sensor been replaced.. think that comes up with a fault code though not sure.. a descent garage would have found that I would have thought..

Both me and garage have run diagnostic checks and both get zero fault codes which doesn't help matters.

Its dificult to tell in this weather being cold but the smoke is a white, grey colour and smells stongly of fuel. Cant smell any fuel when fully warmed up.

Thanks for all the suggestions, they are really helpful, gives me something to think about, please keep them coming :thumb2

Well you and skiingluc are having big hassles with these 2.8's arnt you. Have you thought of ringing one of the big aussie diesel engineers as they know these vehicles and will have come accross all these problems undoubtably.
Just a thought.

Berrima diesel in nsw sydney google them, these guys are well known and might shed some light maybe worth a phone call its cheap to ring these days just chose a time when they are open..

Good shout, I never thought of that. I might just do that if it comes back with pump done and still not working right.
I phoned this morning to check if fuel pipes were checked, he said they were.

mmmmm, not good news today.

Got call from garage to say pump was looked at and apart from a bit of dirt in there which might have come from dirty fuel or crap in the tank, there was actually nothing wrong with the pump.

They've cleaned it all up and sent it back so will just have to put it back on to the trol and see if by some miracle its fixed itself :(

Not a happy chappy, this is now ridiculous. There is no way I can believe this will fix it :doh

Good grief mate not having alot of luck.. Fingers crossed its all good though.

I think...
