Hi, thanks for your input.:thumb2

Are you saying that its effectively the injection pump causing the sensitivity and do you think you could change that using a proper engine remap

Probably or ECU programming. I,ve never heard of a re-map for this engine, if you find where it can be done I might be interested too.

Check the Aussie web forums for this subject as its a known issue with the Y61 2.8, some just advise putting a sponge between your foot and pedal to dampen out any movement.

So do you know what makes this engine difficult to have a remap done on the road?

I also seem to have a lot of oil coming up through the pipe work from the turbo through the intercooler, I know this is also quite common on these engines but if it is too excessive and turns out to be a turbo problem I'm thinking about some sort of more modern upgraded turbo but that would heve to be remapped to accomodate it so not too sure how to do that if its a struggle to remap.

well mate I am very surprised that by now your not considering selling the patrol once its running right, a lot of people would, I am glad you are looking forward and the glass is half full... just get through it mate and look forward to the mods..... by the way did you say you were having an exhaust made? where? and what were they going to charge for that, was it a full 3" system including dump pipe?? been looking into this myself for mine..

Thanks mate. Thing is, this is a really really good truck. I wanted to start modifying this as it's now no longer the family car. I sold the discovery offroader and looked into another family 4x4. I test drove a few different kinds an every time I jumped back in the patrol I thought this is better. I ended up buying a land cruiser colorado and that's it, free to modify the patrol now. I've only ever seen 2 possibly 3 patrols in a couple of years that I thought mmm I went that but they would always be a risk as you dont know what you're buying so here I am. I've spent a good amount of money on this already making sure it's mechanically correct and sorting all the rust issues, still a bit to do yet and if I got another I would have to start again. I only wish it was a swb. Suspension was well over a grand in itself. I just need to know it's running right before spending anymore, and if it is I won't be selling after all this.

Exhaust wise there is a one man company in brackley called PTR Exhausts. He makes a lot of race car exhausts but will do anything I suppose. I've not fully decided on what to do with the system but will be 3" internal bore from turbo back including the bend off the turbo in stainless and will be aboit 550 to £600

I like the colarado nice... I did plan on using my y61lwb as an offroader but I find it a bit tight on some of the places I want to go so I want a swb aswell and will pick something up once I get serious about selling the rangie.. did look at a couple of terrano swb but I prefer the patrol with the solid axles.. swb patrols are rare and difficult to find..

The thing is the patrols are at a funny age. They are old enough now to give serious problems especially with rust but not old enough for people to have done a restoration that would be worth buying in my view, they will be very rare. The blue one on here, I forget his name, looks nice but there are no swb models at all.

On a side note if you are ever popping by this way give us a shout and pop round for a cuppa. Would be nice to see your truck also 👍

Patrols are the best! Mine is giving me issues but I still love it :D
Do not sell!

How is the truck starting when warm? After getting the right temp?

As for the 2.8 remap...There is no cheap option to it. I only know a good company in Poland that does some good stuff but it's a lot of money.
Option is to go for a plug in chip:

I have same thing but without the plugs - wire in. I must say it does make a difference. Not sure about figures as I did not have it on dyno but brings a smile on my face

Thanks for that. I guess you are alluding to the plate mod for the injection pump. It seems to be fine hot starting but I do have the plate you have at the back of my mind.

It looks like exhaust, egr blank and some kind of plug in chip will have to do it. Hope it turns 35 inch tyres lol

It will turn 35's, i will get some pics from andy a mate of mine who run a 2.8 in aussie with all the same mods i anticipate you will want to do.. He had a massive lift and all the gear with standard diffs, gearbox drive train.. We went out just after the big fires in melbourne a few years back to have a look around, a very different place after a fire and alot more places accesible as there was no bushes etc. We went up stuff in his patrol that you wouldnt think possible i was super impressed, you just have to choose you gears however we dont have the landscape like over there.

Yeah it's quite annoying, it just seems most lanes are super tight with thorn bushes growing all around, there is just no space :nenau

mr k, as promised, these are some pics of my mate andy's truck in aus, not the pics I was looking for as the truck progressed on a bit. however this is a 2.8 with 35" mudzilla tyres which look small and a 5" lift plus bodylift... you don't need a lift this big to get 35s on though but he planned on going to 37s.. hope this inspires you and keeps you on track..

Nice pics :thumbs

My next set will be 35s, made the decision after the Yorkshire trip... Patrolman's 37s inspired me :D

Mmmmm, bodylift you say. It looks like he had a 2 inch bodylift in or was it 1 inch. I've wanted to do this but everytime you look up about a body lift in a y61 it gets a big thumbs down. I cant remember why though or what the problems would be.

His truck looks epic, and is certainly inspiring thats for sure :D

In terms of 35's I want to go bigger, as you do, but its the gearing that bothers me. Also its the width that I'm not too sure about, 12.50 inch width tyres or 315 don't look that big on the patrol, I'm guessing thats why your friend went for the mudzilla's, to get a 13.50 width?
Bugger it, some 385's will do it lol

Thanks for the pics :clap

Update...

Had the patrol back for a few days now and had a chance to do a good bit of driving and see whats what. First thing first, the missfire is still there, but I'll come back to that. The drive is a lot better now injector sensor is fixed, feels like it has the power i'd expect which is great.

But now to the pesky missfire. Garage said it seems timing related.
There could be a possibility of something like the control valve sticking as its been sat in the same position while the injection sensor wasn't working, they suggested that I run the car on something like diesel vpower and an additive, give it a good thrashing basicially and see if that helps, if not, it could be a look at the injection pump in terms of getting it off and giving it an overhaul. All systems checked, pipework, turbo, boost pressures diagnostics and all ok.

But now I've been driving it for a few days and the sensor working I've been able to see what this missfire is doing better. First off, truck starts first turn of the key when glow plug lights go off, then runs perfectly for up to a minute, then the missfire starts, very lumpy at about 1.5k and kicks out white, grey smoke which smells really strong, fuel like. Then when truck is fully warmed up it seems to run perfectly, the warmer it gets the less smoke then seems, as I said, all good.

Could this be simply the glow plugs jiggered even though it starts fine when cold, could the after glow be the problem?

The garage said they didn't think it was causing any damage with what it was doing so I've decided to carry on with the mods

Truck is now in to get a 3 inch diameter exhaust fabricated with no silencers, this should make quite an epic sound as its the nicest sounding diesel I've heard :D

Well you need to hear a 4.2 diesel with a straight through from the turbo before you make your mind up on that:thumbs

I would be tempted by changing the plugs as its a cheap option they can break down..

Oooo and when exhaust is done let me know I need to come and have a listen:thumb2

I've never heard the 4.2 unfortunately but yeah, I wouldn't mind lol.

Exhaust will be ready by the end of the week but going to get some more work done so wont be till january till back on the road :thumbs

I think I'll start an exhaust thread to see what other would do design wise...

Well..I'm glad to hear there is a progress. As for the after glow it should not be an issue. I have my glow plugs connected on momentary switch as original system was burning them out (probably faulty glow timer). So basically there is no afterglow on my truck and there is no problems.

Right...

I had my holiday over christmas and left the Patrol to sit and sulk for a while.
I got back and did what the garage told me to see how it would get on, put some forte diesel additive in and also put some premium fuel in.

(I've run 2 stroke oil in previously but not recently, not sure if thats added to or helped mask problem)

The truck was not happy! It started fine then after about 1 minute it started to smoke like never before, really really bad, very strong diesel smell with a miss fire. This is much worse than before.

Booked it back into diesel specialist and just heard back

Glow plugs working fine and relay fine
Compression check done all seemed ok I think it was within 20 to 25 bar for all.

He said when heater plugs turn off I get the problem, so when on it masks the problem and when fully warmed up its ok and lose the smoke.

Basiclly all seems ok and can only narrow it down to three things where fault lies

Combustion chamber, piston crown, or injection pump. So all big jobs and it could be hit or miss.

I know nothing about combustion chamber faults or anything around the piston crown where tolerances are out but I do know they have injector pump faults and failures so I said take that off and work on that, Its got to be that.

My only wish is that I could swap it for a manual pump and put a throttle cable on but I've no idea about doing that conversion or anything else thats needed or even what pump to get so I just said fix the original pump.

Not happy, I chose the 2.8 for reliability, its only got 99k on the clock. :hmh
