fault is a misfire if I have it right, has anyone checked the EGR system? do not know what it is like on your motor but could well cause a problem, what IP do you have? if it is the same as the 3Ltr then pump is most likely naff, Rick

I did think about the egr. I told them to check but I will do the same when it goes to the diesel specialist garage, should be there tomorrow.

Could you tell me what you mean by IP please? Injection pump?

Im also thinking that there might be a secondary fuel filter in terms of a gauze filter in the injection pump that could be blocked. Could be the next place to look.

Thanks for your help :)

Forgot to say egr has been blocked off. Can it be blocked wrong? Don't know if butterfly valve has been removed. I don't think so.

If I was to guess about IP I would have to say it would be different to the 3 litre but maybe someone can confirm.

Hang on, Rob mentioned something about this, if you don't make other changes on the 3.0 after blanking the EGR it kills them doesn't it?

This is the 2.8 though and I believe that it doesn't need the extra mods to accommodate the egr blank. I will double check online with a search.

OK not sure that it applies then, worth checking though

I personally would bypass all the fuel pipes and run a small temp tank under the bonnet just to see.

Im going to pop to the diesel specialist this afternoon and see what there thoughts are and put everything I know to them. They should be able to check the entire fuel system from back to front to see whats happening. They bloody well better I hope and we can go from there...

Just another point to put pieces of the puzzle together, I don't know if this will make a difference to anyones thoughts.

I got the car fully serviced including fuel filter and engine flush and when I got it back it was definitely more powerful and slowly slipped back to the way it is.

Also, when cold, if I just start the car and drive straight away, it drives ok (but im sure not 100% right, not powerful enough) but if I let it warm up with the heat button its air/fuel seems all wrong and misses and smokes and does not drive too smooth. These are smokey engines anyway but if it was black I wouldn't worry.

Some pumps have a gauze filter in them which partially blocks, possibly been removed at this age though, its only about 12mm round. I know you did mention it in an earlier post

Also to add to the list above When I've been in low box and on a rough road the car has been nearly impossible to drive smoothly. I know it has a fly by wire throttle which is very sensitive but a rough green lane road with lots of bumps in 1st low box its just juddering all over the place as the jolt from a bump knocks my foot on the throttle. It just seems super super sensitive :nenau

Once again is it pointing towards air/fuel?

I want to get that gauze filter out and cleaned no matter what :thumb2

anyone know if this engine is anything like the Navara D22 2.5 2001, as I have been working on one of these today, re the filter yes have a look but if it is the same as I saw today buy a new solenoid bolt, Rick

Dont think it is as the 2.8 is 6 cylinder, the d22 is a 4 cyl..

Quick update. Truck is now at diesel specialist. I decided to drive it there myself as 1, it was taking too long and 2, I wanted to give it a test drive myself.

First impressions are that the new injector sensor has helped, seems slow but not drivin it for a while so maybe just used to driving something faster, but no roughness from the test drive, not conclusive yet and still seems smokey but that has changed.

Coming from the wife who was following the truck started off the same with lots of light coloured smoke on acceleration. Once along a bit and warmed up I decided to be more aggresive with the throttle and the smoke turned more a black colour on hard acceleration (first time its ever kicked out black smoke) then seemed to not smoke after.

First thoughts but, can the car working properly be learning with the new injector sensor and just clearing itself out with built up crap.

Diesel garage are going to give it a look over but might not be till middle of next week now :doh

Mate I bet this is getting stressful now

I think black smoke is unburnt fuel, or as the yanks say, rollin' coal :lol

The Y61 2.8 are very sensitive to throttle position and almost uncontrollable when bumpy, you have to learn to jam your foot into the side wall to stop it moving. I have been thinking of making a voltage splitter or adding a smoothing capacitor in circuit to delay the voltage decay from the pedal position potentiometer especially when in low box. The Y60 mechanical pump engines don't suffer from this.

Hi, thanks for your input.:thumb2

Are you saying that its effectively the injection pump causing the sensitivity and do you think you could change that using a proper engine remap

Yes, very stressful. Ive got the truck booked in to get a custom built exhaust on the 7th and its looking likely that I will probably have to cancel this now as time is against me :(

Im taking the fact the smoke was black as a good sign

A bit of black smoke is fine, especially if its only when you put your foot down, lots of black smoke all the time is a sign of overfueling I believe! Diesel specialist will spot and sort owt like that tho! That sensitive throttle would drive me mental btw :lol
