I did my water pump a few weeks ago and left the rad in place... was a bit fiddly (especially getting the fan back onto the pump) but do-able... I think you need to unclip the bottom piece of the fan shroud, this is done from below, and then you undo the 2 bolts holding the rest of the shroud to the radiator and it just lifts up and out (as best I can remember)... thinking about it you can probably unclip the bottom bit from above and get it out but it is an easy job to take off the bash plate first

it's been so long since i've messed with the fan i just can't remember the details, sorry!

my reply above was to get the fan cowling off only... to do the whole job is a lot harder lol :lol:lol:lol drain water, remove belts by loosening alternator and power steering pump, remove fan from front of pump/viscous unit, Think I had to remove the power steering pump bracket too..then unbolt the pump from the engine block... clean facing and refit in reverse order and retighten belts correctly and top up water/anti freeze :clap:clap:clap took me about 5 hours over 2 evenings but I am not a 'proper' mechanic

well after a lot of fiddlin around and a lot of swearing i am no closer to removing the damn thing :doh

ok many moons ago i removed the fan blades and all has been fine and dandy until today, the ali lump the blades were on has started to rub on the bolts on the water pump so i'm going to grind it off, question is do i have to remove the rad to do this? there looks like there will be room with the rad in situ but i dont want to risk killing the rad aswell at the same time i dont really want to take it out as for some reason my gear oil travels through the bloody thing as does another pipe that i have no idea what it is for

if your is an auto, it will have an oil cooler at the bottom of the rad:thumb2

I cut mine off but did take the rad out. As you've got the oil cooler on too how about putting a sheet of steel on the inside of the rad, just incase:sly Possibly a decent bit of ply will do :thumbs

I guess what you are saying is the viscous bit still has the captive bolts on it and they are now rubbing the pulley, so why not just put 4 nuts and spacers on to take the place of the fan, lot easier than grinding, and also gives you the retained option of fitting the fan if the need arises, global warming and all that crapp, Rick

a sheet of ply might even be better, but to be honest unless you actually cut into the rad with the grinder i can't see a few sparks doing much harm.

but don't quote me on that :augie

cracked the viscous coupling in half today front half off back half still on the pump after some inspection i have a cunning plan :sly, pics to follow as the plan unfolds :D

Interesting, cannot wait for the pics, Rick

the viscous coupling, this is the front half that can be removed, just 4 bolts hold it in place, this is the inside of it, very easy to take apart, 10mm spanner, to remove the fan off the coupling i had to use a 10mm socket, but did that months ago and forgot to take pics, more pics to follow on this project aswell as info on how it pans out
