I noticed today the fan behind my rad wasn't spinning properly and it had a wobble to it, i turned the engine off and span it by hand and sure enough there is a very significant wobble almost as though it isn't being held on properly, i was just wondering if it is an easy fix before i get the spanners out and is it likely to need a new fan?

could be the viscous coupling.. not sure you can get a new one only with a water pump

fan

Hi the coupling comes with water pump

paulp

but the fan is bolted to the visous coupling isn't it? could the bolts just be loose?

easy to see wobble the fan if the finned ali lump moves with it its the coupling, if the ali lump stays still tighten the bolts, Rick

if it is the viscous coupling is it a big job to repair?

like the earlier posts, new water pump dont know the cost of these (I have a petrol and the coupling is separate) but remove the rad, drive belts, fan, move PS pump out of the way, unbolt water pump, reasemble no problem, Rick

well i wobbled the fan and the ali lump move with it so its the coupling :doh

Had a fan break off the viscous coupling, metal fatigue and go throught the rad
Bryn

probly not wise to drive it til fixed then eh? bloody typical got to goto birmingham childrens hospital on wednesday

it's not a massive job, it's been a bout 3 years since i did one and the pump cost around £60 from a local motor factor (Quinton Hazel part)

just looked on milners £51 plus dlivery, i'll try my local motor factors in the morning

You can easily run without the fan on till you get time to do it.
Just unbolt the plastic fan bit and then the viscous lump will spin with no load and be fine and dandy :thumbs
Unless your towing one of those tin tent things or sitting in summer traffic for an hour the temp will never go above half way:D

thats good news, i'll probly do that then, then fix it over the weekend :D

I took my viscous off with an angle grinder months ago:sly
Never gets hot on the road:thumbs
It takes a lot of off road agro before it gets warm;)

am i right in thinking to get the fan off i've still got to remove the rad?

you can even change the water pump with the rad in place!

I would price up the belts that run around the pump while your at it, they are about £4 each and incorrect belt tension is a common cause of pump failure so get it all done at once.

ok i think my brain has gone on holiday cos i cant figure out how to get the bloody thing off :doh
