what Terrno model to buy?

Hi All - I am looking to buy a good Terrano. I have seen a few of what I think are terrano 1's on Autotrader (1996). I assume from what I have read these are non intercooled, and therefore less powerfull. Unfortunately most of what I have found relates to the Terrano II. Has anyone any thoughts - I am assuming the Terrano I is still Chipable and possibly able to take a few other mods?

Hi adam those 2 terranos are jap imports i believe, i don't know anything about them but i'm sure there will be someone along soon to give you all the info you need.

yep jap imports,same engine as uk terranos usually auto,do search on here for R3M thats there usal name.
nice motors tonnes on here about them! cheap aswell both of them!

Terrano II 2.7 TDi is what your looking for I believe got mine (R Reg) for 2500 in December off Autotrader and has nothing wrong with it in perfect nick

yeah those are R3mR's, what id call a Terrano, not a terrano 2 by name at least, although they have similar parts etc.

I assumed the Intercooler (which I think is what gives some Terrno II's there extra power) would have a air scoop on the bonnet?

hi as already stated they are imports and do not have an intercooler

do not believe the insurance group

i found out too late that despite being told different imports are dearer to insure

but they are great motors

make sure on the test drive that the autobox goes into overdrive which only happens at about 45 mph when warm ( safety feature to stop box damage when too cold to operate)

if the same as the mistral the revs should be about 2500 @ 70 mph

ps the second one is definitely not a terrano 2 touring SE - some dealers try to pass them off as terrano 2 as the insurance is generally dearer

this thread seems a little confused, look at paulp's profile picture (above) his Mistral is the same as an early Terrano 2, with no bonnet scoop or intercooler, above that you have a T2 TDI the same engine but with different fuel injection and an intercooler. The RM3R or Terrano (As opposed to Terrano2) is a completely different shape and as far as i know they are all imports and automatic gearboxes.

They are all good vehicles, the only thing i would suggest is that if you do a lot of heavy towing (over 1800K) I would go for a manual rather than an auto, but apart from that, just find the best one you can for you money :thumb2

OK so I am a little biased as I have one but the R3mR is a nice motor as unlike the standard Terrano it has coil spring suspension all round and have a nice specification- air con, OTG ETC.
Mine is a 1995 but its the 96 model it has an intercooler but no bulge on the bonnett its built into the nearside inner wing panel and the scoop is in the lower front panel. Mine is an automatic with o/d , selectable RWD or auto 4 WD with manual Low / High range selection lever. It also has diff lock for serious snow or offroading.

The handbook shows it is also marketed as a Regulus model 1995-2002 they are still being imported from Japan by some small importers. As they are not very economical there are plenty on the market though you have to search on Autotrader as they are usually lumped in with standard Terranos.

my comments regarding towing with an auto were for a Terrano 2, not an RM3R, I have no knowledge regarding their towing ability :thumb2

I do quite fancy one, especially if it has an intercooler, but I do around 100miles per day to get to work. I am planning to make my own bio diesel, but if I cannot source free WVO then I wont bother, in which case MPG is important. Towing is not why I want one so that is not a concern.

Well in your neck of the woods you will struggle to find free/cheap WVO frankly.

And if the R3MR is same as the Terrano, bank on a real-world 23-25mpg in mixed driving. Not very economical for a daily drive of that order.

If you buy a Jap import you buy the 'issues' that always go with it.:augie

Yep.

Too many people buying in WVO to make Bio for on-sale. Even the bus companies like Stagecoach are in on the act now.

WVO goes for 50-60p/litre on eBay these days.

interesting point - I was not aware demand for WVo was so widespread. I assumed my local chippy was probably paying for disposal, and that I would be doing him a favour, looks like I could be wrong. I have seen it on e-bay, but figured some people just cant be arsed to go out and find a free supply.

Macbethiel - would welcome your thoughts on MPG - just sold an Alfa V6 - was getting 23/24 mpg, and that was being gentle - assuming one of these would be better (not to mention more relaible)?

You will probably also find that most chippies that sell good chips use beef dripping / fat not veg oil- this is solid till around 50 Deg C.

If you have an abundance of Keebab shops run by Turks / Muslims they're not too keen on the beef fat and use Veg oil.

Your local pub that does food may be a regular small supply.
