Vibrations in 2wd

Hello,

I have a problem with my 2.4 Terrano 2002 that maybe you guys can help me with.

The car vibrates in 2wd. It runs perfectly fine in 4wd but in 2wd it vibrates when driving over 50 miles per hour. I can hear the shuddering sound and feel the vibrations in the seat, steering wheel, gear stick and pedals.

What can cause this? I have checked the ujoints and the only thing I can see is a little play in the rear propshaft when I turn It clockwise anticlockwise. Like a 1 - 2 mm play. Can this cause the vibration when driving in 2wd? Any other suggestions?

Hi rather than twisting it back and forward, try lifting it up and down any play here will put it out of balance, Rick

I would think that in 4 Wheel you are getting transmission wind up so eliminating the play, Rick

As Solarman says but also check the front propshaft as I’m guessing due to age of vehicle it maybe fixed front hubs so will be turning the front transmission up to the transfer box. Mine did that once and it turned out to be the front propshaft has a sliding joint which wears but is not repairable so I got a replacement from a breaker. How I checked was reaching underneath the vehicle and grabbing the front prop and tugging it sideways and you could feel a tiny bit of movement and a small click.
Also don’t forget the old cookie wheel balance?

Have you checked your rear wheels for buckling or flat spots?

When in 2WD am I right in thinking it is RWD only ?

Does it make any difference at 50 mph if you very lightly lift off the power or apply the brakes slightly?

I know yours is different rear suspension to my old r3mR but I had an issue caused by worn rear suspension.

I would initially suspect the rims - try front to rear wheel change so it it goes away, w wheel balance will quickly show up a damaged wheel.

Thanks Rick, that seems to be the problem. When I lift the rear prop up and down there is some play in the front of the propshaft. I will leave it to the local mechanic for it to be changed.

The front prop seems solid.

Don't think it's wheel related because I changed from summer wheels to winter wheels last week and the vibration is still there. But will change the u joints on the rear prop as it seems to be some play there. Hopefully it will solve the problem [emoji106]

But I will have look at the suspension as well! Thanks for the tip.

Removed the front shaft and take the truck out for a drive.
If the problems are gone, problem found
Had the same with mine and checked it like this. Only 8 bolts holding it in place.

Thinking about doing this.. Is it only to take it down with the 8 bolts or do I need to mark it with a pen so it goes back where it was?
