I finally got around to fitting the Second Battery today..

While sorting out the Towbar wiring, and adding all the accessory wiring, I made sure to route all the wires so I could add a second battery when time and funds allowed.

Suz's Dad has a disability buggy and the time had come to change its batteries for new ones. So, I decided that we would use the old ones for a while in the car.

Since at some point, I will need to replace the “Buggy” battery with a more traditional “car” type battery, the first job was to make up some battery posts, since the buggy batteries just have 2 bolt holes for the terminals. To do this I cast some lead round a 6mm bolt, and then screwed it onto the battery.

I then fitted the battery tray. This is a universal one off of Ebay, and I very pleased with it, nice and thick, and the battery clamp is second to none.

Finished engine bay. The wire from the car battery runs via a 175amp fuse through the black conduit on the brake lines to the 200amp Split charge relay on the passenger wing, then on to the second battery. The split charge relay is energised by the Alternator, so only connects the second battery once the engine is actually running.

The spare relay holders are already wired up, for the front Roof Lights when I get them.

That's a neat job :clap
You might want to cover the positive post though:thumb2

Cheers, I will be doing that, just need to get a better battery clamp, as those are pants, so will get a nice clamp and cover at same time.

Fitted the two Voltmeters today. One for the main battery, and the other for the second battery..

Very pleased with the results, they fitted in there a dream.

They are actually a lot more readable than they look in the picture, it is mega bright sunshine out there at the moment.

Like this setup a lot Clive, when I get my project truck back off the wife I'm doing a similar arrangement but have one display with two push button switches so that I can press to see what each battery is doing. Are your displays on all the time or are they just when Ignition is on?

At the moment they are on all the time, I was thinking of having just one with an On/Off/On switch, but the reasoning behind doing it this way is, the car can be left standing for a week, so I can just glance in the window as I walk to my car, and check the battery status, they only draw 20ma, and these are the 3 wire meters, so they take their power from one wire, and use another to measure the voltage... Both meters are basically running off the second battery. They are so cheap, a Switch would have cost as much as the second meter..

If it looks like it may be a problem in the future, I will just fit a small on/off switch beside them.

Thanks, that is very kind of you.

You hit the nail on the head, sometimes I wish I could just switch my mind off...

I was taking a bath the other night, and Suz came in to talk to me, and said, wow you look miles away, what you thinking.. I was working out a way of wiring up the new motor mover we have just got for the caravan, but making a way that I could turn it on from a remote place, as the main on/off switch is blocked when it is in the drive, as we park it right up by the fence.. She asked if I ever just had a blank mind.

Beginning to regret only buying one meter now:doh

I do like your idea about being able to glance in and see the reading.

I've noticed the voltages are different, I checked mine a week or so back and noticed the second battery was higher.

Fitted the reversing camera system today...

I got a small camera that I fitted in the bumper, which comes on when you select reverse, and a long range one on the rear of the roof for normal rear view when driving. I also fitted a socket to the hideaway behind the rear number plate, so I can connect the caravan camera up to it when towing.

The monitor is just a small 4.3" one that fold flat against the dash when not in use, cheap and cheerful, but time will tell how good it is.

I have already ordered a different wider angle camera for the bumper, as the one that came with the monitor has too narrow an angle, and basically just gives me a close up of the towball.

I've taken a little interest in them myself, blocky and madmark have rear view mirrors with a camera and screen built in, must be able to hook a reversing cam up too :nenau

I have an expensive Waeco setup on my car, the monitor replaces the rear view mirror completely, but since my rear window is blanked off anyway, there is no point in a rear view mirror. It makes life so much better when towing the caravan though, as having a camera on the back of the caravan means you can see what is right behind it.

Slightly of track but I had a twin wheel Transit with a Luton body, tow bar and rear step, which made parking really difficult, this was a few years ago now and the stuff today was not around, but from Maplins (I think) I got a waterproof bullet camera and from some place else got a bare screen about 4inch made a wooden case for it and set it up, camera on top of body looking down, I could park in a space only a foot or so longer than the motor, absolute bliss, lots of shunts but I had also installed power steering so was easy, Rick

Ha. Fooled ya there. It stopped working about 2 weeks after fitting it.
Absolute shite I'll tell ya but yes it did record and also came with a second camera to fit at the rear but never got that far!
It was about £30 off Amazon I think. Need to spend more:thumbs

Just an update to post up pictures of the reversing camera install...

Here is the monitor on the dash, it folds flat when you do not need it.

And in this picture you can make out the camera on the roof that gives you a permanent rear view, the one for when you are reversing is in the bumper under the spare wheel, must get a picture of that...

I fitted her new rear step today as well....

I have removed the side steps....

not permanently, but to clean them up, and fit side marker lights to them. What a job... Had to drill out several seized bolts, and make a whole new mounting for the rear, as the Aluminium had completely oxidised away where the RivNuts should have been.
