Not sure if a pump rebuild is needed yet. I will be getting it started regardless :thumb2. It's just a pain, but...oh well it is a project and I got it for rather low price :D

I have done a compression test to exclude any possible issues in this area.
All 6 cylinders have 400+ PSI so I'm happy :D

I know nothing about this engine but from your description it is a timing issue, but this could be physical or ECU related, I have no idea but timing it is, Rick

Have you done a diagnostic check on this?

Don't have any compatible equipment at the moment but trying to get the right stuff now. Could go to my mechanic but try to do most of the stuff myself :thumb2

Guess what! New battery turned out to be faulty:doh
Installed it and wanted to check voltage on charge....12.3V.....
Ok, maybe my old multimeter has gone crazy but having a small fleet of cars outside I thought I will check others. All around 14V....
Installed old battery back in....again around 14V...
Returning it tomorrow for a new one....

I've got a thread open at the moment having my own issues with the 2.8. I put a post up on how to do a self dianostic check :thumbs

Just got a cable Nissan 14 pin to 16 pin OBD II. Yet need to test it with obd scanner or laptop :)

Read about your problem and posted :thumb2

(not that I have solved it:D)

I'm very interested to see if you get that to work as I was working with Ray to get it working on my car and we seem to have hit a brick wall and failed miserably :(

Here's what we tried, and what we did, it's not as easy as just buying the 14 pin to 16 pin adaptor as the pinouts are all different;

I advise a cup of tea before you start reading

I cut a 14 pin socket from one of my scrappers and grafted it onto a 16 pin plug, so can now hook up my lappy with ecu talk to a pre 2004 motor and later ones go straight to the lappys original OBD interface, Rick

Yes the converter cable does not work...:)
Was cheap enough. Ordered one for consult II with usb to laptop...will see then.

Right. I have managed to get some time yesterday and got some simple diagnostics done. Using 14 pin plug (Ebay) and Ecu Talk. Concerning fact is that coolant temp was just over 50 C after 20 minute drive..... So maybe new thermostat is failing. Will have to replace that probably together with temp sensors (second time) - cheap enough.
Also we have played a little bit with the pump timing - adjusting it manually. It did seem to start and drive better yesterday. However this morning came back to how it was....really bizarre....

Won't get much time before Christmas as I'm going away therefore this will be it for this year...:nenau

Can't remember if you covered it or not but have you tried running the trol without the chip in it to see if it makes a difference as the one you have has some kind of cold start program in it which I'm wondering could be causing a potential problem? :nenau

Starting issue was there before the chip.....

Getting ready the strip the rear axle for powder coating. Also will be chaning the thermostat and temp sensor as the water temp is way too low....

Managed to change the stat and water temp sensor. Truck is now getting the right temp and the heating works. Gauge is showing temp close to the limit but diagnostics says around 84. Will change the gauge sensor hoping that will cure it. So overall a good result.

I have changed the water temp sender and now everything is fine. Water temp and gauge at the right level :thumb2

Having the above sorted decided to use few hours on Saturday to do this:
