One of the drive shaft oil seals has failed  therefore need to drop the diff oil strip N/S one more time and replace the seal again. Glad all is rust free so it should be rather easy job...:thumb2

That's a bigger mate...

Seal replaced and no leaks so far :thumb2

Now thinking about changing oem auto hubs to manual....may do the conversion using the existing ones...will see...

OMG just caught up with this thread. Absolute truck porn this is.:bow:bow:bow:thumb2

Following the cold start issue I am currently waiting for the pump advance plate. Not sure if you guys have heard about it. Pumps on 2.8 suffer internal wear and cause both cold and hot start issues.A lot of cranking required and a lot of smoke produced in the start up process. That's in a case of cold start problem. Nissan in Australia to battle this got Denso to produce an advance plate that is fitted to the pump. Changes its timing slightly. Unfortunately the supplier in Down under has not got them in stock and Japan wasn't sure where these can be supplied. Luckily I have managed to find a guy who had these made by Denso in Europe. Awaiting delivery. I really hopes that will solve the issue....

If not...well...pump rebuild....?....Engine swap...LC...BMW...?

Who will pay for this...:nenau

Right. Fitted the plate on Friday (nota long job but my hands look like after the fight with a cat) and....engine did not fire up at all.... Tried next day and the same.....loads of smoke as well...
Installed the old one back and Patrol started - as usual after some cranking...

Read a lot on this subject and haven't really came across this outcome....I was hoping it will cure the issue or worse case won't make a difference....

A bit disappointed now...:(

interesting stuff though matey, seems as if you're the UK pioneer for this pump advance as I've never heard of that before!!! You sure you're not just a glow plug or 2 down? :nenau

The plugs are new. Had to change them twice as they were burning out. I have installed a momentary switch to glow the plugs as for some reason the original system was keeping the power on constantly...hence the burning.
Relay is fine, could be the timer itself, but will look into it in the future.

Will be changing the cambelt soon so will double check timing wityh my mechanic.

As for the plate it was covered on Australian forums...apparently does solve the hot issue start every time. Mine although cold did not work. So got a plate for sale if anyone suffers from hot start issue.

Now the battery died.....:(

To be honest it lasted quite some time with current starting problems...
On charge now, but it may be time for something from Optima range....

Hows things going mate, any update on the engine troubles.. 4.2 conversion :augie nissan really did let themselves down with the 2.8 and zd30 motors.

Tbh bud as much as I lust after a 4.2 conversion I gotta admit my ZD30 hasn't let me down and takes all the abuse I throw at it... although granted I have tweaked it a bit! :augie

In fairness though Nissan definitely made a cock up of the first ZD30s :doh

I took a chance buying an early one but it has only done 35k since it was rebuilt at a nissan dealership, exactly what you have said i cant fault mine and i love driving it, however the TUNIT box does make a big difference... I did love my old 4.2t gu though..

Not had much time lately to look at it....Will have a look with my mechanic mate at pump timing...
As for the conversion I'dlove to to that 4.2 from Patrol - rare find, 4.2 from LC or the best but the most expensive one BMW m57 3.0.
I can't afford any of the above at current stage Also got a Saab 9-5 and Celica GT4 ST185. Difficult for me to let any of them go...:)

Must say that Nissan is rather weird...Patrol is probably one of the best heavy duty 4x4...axles, etc...but engines....A beast like that....you shouldn't have to be opening bonnet at all...

Other thing is that with winter coming I don't get that much time to play with cars outside...:(

unfortunately diesels have become highly strung with all the emission restrictions and its only getting worse, well unless its a vw.. old school Nissan engines were bullet proof units and you wouldn't be opening the bonnet, the worst thing I have ever had to deal with on a 4.2 Nissan was a leaking water pump and that was on a engine that had done 505,000km, everything else was just preventative maintenance and servicing. having said that the 4.2 is a true TRUCK engine and still used in countries that don't have the restrictions we have here..
can you get a second hand pump from a breaker or get yours rebuilt at a reasonable cost... seems a shame you have got this far to be held up by this, snow is on its way..
