Ah right I can see why this would be dodgy for general towing, I deff would not tow my car trailer on such a device, but would happily mount a winch on it front or rear, Rick
I can see why you would not want to tow anything heavy using one, I'd be hesitant but I plan on making my own with dual pins and it will probably be heavier duty :thumb2
Its a future project Rick, any sugestions on what type of metal to use?, I feel that mild steel might not be tough enough!
You are correct, use high tensile, remember that beam we cut at bears that I could not drill, that is the stuff to use, the main reason we could not drill it was cos we could not get the pressure needed at above our heads, it is like stainless slow speed high pressure, and make sure all your bolts are 8.8 Rick
I think there are 10.1 bolts aswel aren't there?, they stronger than the 8.8?
probably but 8.8 are well strong enough, Rick
Bolts are available in 8.8, 10.9 & 12.9 tensile. I would use 8.8 as the harder the bolt the more likely it is to shear as they are more brittle. An 8.8 bolt is high tensile any way so don't use anything of a lower grade same with the steel really hardox is more likely to crack than mild steel so use a good quality mild steel with a low carbon content & good wall thickness. I haven't looked at one myself but I would assume a type approved hitch would be made from cds which is a seamless box.
Did a bit of laning round Huddersfield area, couldn't squeeze down this one though
