I live in a village surrounded by countryside, I have walked and cycled many tracks and farm tracks in the area for over 30 years, never having any issues.
Just lately, I have heard about a game keeper telling walkers and cyclists to get off of a rough old track that has been known and used as a footpath/right of way for as long as I can remember. I always thought it was part of the Icknield way, but maybe wrong.
Anyway, today I get home early and decide to go on my pushbike, it's about a 6 mile ride some lanes, some field/farm tracks.
Along come this bloke on a quad bike, makes me stop and tells me I'm trespassing...on private land bla bla bla. I tell him I and many others have walked and rode this track for well over 30 years and if it is private, why are there keep out signs off of this track, into woods and fields. I get told that I could get injured if he or a tractor run into me and I must stay off this track.

I thought the government brought in a right to roam as long as your not doing damage :nenau
What do you guys think,

I'd have a look at a OS map as it may well be a right of way marked down.

Failing all else get in touch with your local council's ROW officer & ask them about this track:augie you never know they might give you a list of ones you can also drive:thumb2

He won't rock the boat by asking if the track in question is legal to walk or ride a bike along:augie farmers, land owners & game keepers have been trying for years to stop people using legal tracks even tho they know fine well there is a ROW:doh

I think this is what the game keeper is doing, he flies around on this bloody great quad, I have found tracks from it all over the area.
I have spoken to few of the older generation and they say that this track has been used for more 70 years by local people.
I'm just going to keep walking and riding on it.
Oh, it's no good as an off road lane/track as there is a bloody great tree across one end and turning around would be a mare

Damn still never mind :thumb2

If you want to borrow my terrano feel free :lol

I believe if it has been used for a certain length of time and 70 years is a fair old time, that they have to prove there is no right of way. Might end up in the lap of a solicitor?

Go on your local council website and see if they have the definitive map of the area online.
If they do it will be clearly marked as a right of way on there.

The right to roam might be questionable as yes you can be doing damage even though you dont think so.

I live on a 3000 arce estate which has a shoot. This time of year the birds are just being released and people are being pushed back onto the public footpaths. A dog off the lead in a stubble feild could put up over 100 partridge and can cause loss of birds.

I now some gamekeepers can be very touchy about their patch.

Very good point and I fully understand the game bird issue. The argument here though, is the game keeper has marked a footpath just the other side of a hedge..10ft away from the track. He has also marked areas as (do not enter or private keep out) off of the track.
The new footpath is along the edge of an arable field and at this moment you have to pick your way along a rough ploughed edge. This game keeper is trying it on in my view.

Sounds like, but probably becuase of the odd few with their uncontrolable dogs ect he is now having issues perhaps? :nenau

A bit of give and take I guess, but agree, definately trying his luck :p

Yeah but he just can't change the route of a foot path on a whim. Keep walking it and tell him to take it further...

I have been a walker for years.
And I have seen locals do all sorts of things to stop you using on the map footpaths from big wooden fences erected to lots of barbed wire.

There's a mountain walk in the lakes I love.
The last 2 miles is on relative flat ground.
The local farmer built a fence blocking access to the path making walkers climb another few hundred feet to get around it.

A bloke owns a farm near where I work. There was a finger board pointing down a public footpath at the side of his farm.same again he barb wired the style up.then removed the finger board and built a fence in place of the style.
It is illegal for them to do this.
Think they own the place but they do not.

Public footpath means public.
