Problem ... no acceleration

Bear with me ..............

suspected Mass Air Sensor (MAS), as have had this issue before ... Changed MAS but no improvement in performance. ( rash decision !! )

have not got consult reader (awaiting dly) so shorted plug as per workshop 29 instructions.
Found codes only flash if link LEFT CONNECTED.
Also seem unable to DELETE codes ( IGN on / engine not running)

original codes
12 ( MAF sensor signal error)
34 ( injector needle lift signal)
43 (accelerator pedal posn incorrect signal)

I have recently run engine with (old) MAF sensor disconnected & also with Accelerator pedal disconnected..... hence , I think, code 12 & code 43

I ran car ( 1 mile only!) with no air filter (old MAS ) .... still no acceleration

Tried code deletion with paperclip, code 34 remained ( engine ign on, but not fired up)

So code 34 seemed "stuck"

Disconnected battery overnight / shorted L&N / left lightswitch on/pumped brake pedal ...... in attempt to delete codes from ECU overnight

reconnected battery / Ign ON but engine not fired up / Code 34 still there.

Just tested resistance across sensor at Plug connection / IGN OFF / = open circuit / >2000K Ohms
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

About to test MAS as per Workshop 2 download for 12v IGN@ terminal 2 ... & 1 volt @ terminal 5.

Can also check Accelerator pedal for 1 - 5 v & ground ( but I think OK as car will rev if on flat road / also will rev to 4,500 rpm limiter stop)

also commencing fitting new fuel filter and air filter ( both old filters fitted within last 10K miles)

will have to re-bleed fuel lines after fitting so air should not be issue

Banjo filter on diesel pump was also checked approx 6 months ago & no problems seen.

EGR mod not done, but link rod seems to have acceptable movement ( have to do the ball bearing blockage at some point .... but not at moment. )

Car will run ( slowly ! ) up to 70 MPH as long as there are no hills !

have checked hoses for splits & leaks ..... all seem OK
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

QUESTIONS ???

1. is code 34 remaining due to the ECU doing its system check on Ign turn on, and thus logging a code 34 even though engine not fired up ?? ... is this why I cannot "Clear" code ??

2. Does ECU remain in "limp home" mode for may-be 30 miles or so after changing the MAS ?? (car now done 40+ miles)

3. Any other check I can do on No.1 injector / sensor before I commit to £180 quid new part ??

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Sorry it's a long one !!!

Sorry... should have added that it is a BOSCH injector ... so I expect 100 ohms or so across No.1 sensor plug .

stupid question I know , but have you checked to see if you have a mini filter ? , I know it wont erase your code , but may help improve matters

mini filter ?? .. as in small in line fuel filter ??
no, have not got one.

have now changed main fuel filter & air filter / still no acceleration / still zero Ohms on No.1 injector / have now removed this for part numbers.
pretty sure this is problemo, but 180 smackers is painful if I'm wrong.

thanks for reply Briggie. appreciate all the tech info on the forum.

is it possible to try a used one that is known to be ok before laying out lots of moola ? ......... ignore me I know nuffin :augie:lol

2 months later still cant clear code. still got lack of power. been on diagnostic computer and now no codes reading.
i cant fix cars and am ready bang my head against the wall with this one.or change vehicle.
i hope the answer is found soon.

i cant justify 180 for an injector when the ecu is telling me the faults cleared:nenau:nenau:nenau

I'm not getting "faults cleared " = (code 55 or possibly 44 )

immediate code on Ign is code 34 ( no 1 injector )

all signs point to this injector module failure, but 180 quid on a gamble is problem

thanks to all for replies

I am in usual problem , as with many members.

we 'ain't runnin' 18 year old vehicles 'cos we are eccentric millionaires !!

Even the local scrapyards have no Terrano's .... that's when you KNOW you are running an old car !!!

mini filter as inside the fuel inlet banjo on the top front of the ip.17mm socket with a long extension will get it out,be aware of the 2 copper washers though.mini filter needs to be pulled out or drilled out like i have done.
make sure the primer button on the filter housing holder is not being pulled down when under load.bypass it with a large clear inline filter to see what happens.

OK first off the mini filter is on the RETURN line to the tank, second if you have 100 ohms or near then No 1 injector is fine, to explain the mini filter is a pressure regulator orifice that is there to stabilize the pump residual pressure but the filter is to stop it blocking, however if the filter blocks as is often the case then the residual pressure in the pump climbs too high, now this brings us to further issues as to where this blocking debris comes from, well it can only originate from inside the pump itself, ie wear, well you cannot stop that (other than add two stroke oil to improve lubrication) so best to remove the filter, Rick

rick sorry to disagree but both my t2 tdi 98 and 99 are bosch and mini filter were in the feed banjo on top of ip at front behind belts from filter to ip line,i have not taker the return feed of to see if a mini is in there as well.
in his first post he says he has cleaned it 6 months befor but could still be semi flow.

I have no1 injector from a 98 -99 model the wires have been cut and re joined but engine was spot on when removed with this join. If any help to you problem I can send said injector and if works out fine it'll be £30 if it doesn't sort problem simply send me it back. Mobile I 07769154840 if any one wanna take me up on offer

Mmmmm there is no point in having the mini filter in the flow as the main filter goes to a much finer particle size, and also the mini filter incorporates a restriction orifice that could not provide anyway near enough fuel delivery to run much above idling, Rick

i had fuel starvation on a run, pulled over throttled it and grey smoked no real revs, decided to pull top front feed banjo of and pulled out mini filter, put it back together and away it went with no re-acouring of the problem.

I can only assume that someone prior to you had had both banjo's off and mixed them up, when I get time I will pull the Mrs Bosch pump pipes off and have a look, Rick

My early T2 had a mini filter too - way I understood it, in the early days the main fuel filter was paper based and if left in too long could potentially start to break down. The mini filter is there to catch bits of the main filter.

Seemed an odd explanation but mine did go WAY better after I dropped it and lost it while trying to clean it!
