cannot rule out the diff just cos you changed the oil, breather pipe broke so what did the oil you drained look like? if it got water in then probably foofed diff, Rick

Suggest you drain your oil pronto, if it is milky you have problems, Rick

Oils in the veg oil bottle below and was a murky brown colour

and yep I've been inside the brake drums fez and they seem fine, no loose springs or anything floating around inside

How can I repair the breather pipe?

How far have you driven it since you did the oil change, you may want to put a few miles on the clock, as the new oil may need to get into the plates

depends on why the pipe is off if there is a metal bit in the end of the rubber hose then you need a new metal pipe come threaded bit that screws into the top of the diff casing, if not and there is a horizontal pipe on top of the diff then just push the hose onto the pipe, Rick

20 - 30 miles so far, I'll give it a run over the weekend

Ok, so I got my gf to drive the car today down a quiet industrial estate and with the rear seats folded down, rear door secured open and me hanging out of the back on my stomach holding onto the tow bar, we were hurtling along at 30mph in 4th gear and the rattling started again and the worst was confirmed

I def think that it's the diff thats rattling, something weird I have noticed as she was hitting the accelerator the diff seemed to be "flexing" it was rotating on it's axis if you know what I mean, and I'm not sure if that makes sense and I know it has to do that slightly because of the amount of torque involved but I'm not sure what the tolerance is supposed to be

So I think I'm going to contact CNCFabs to see how much a new axle is going to be, anyone local who fancies helping me fit it?

very odd why should it only do it at speed, if the clutch plates had gone then in a straight line they do not come into play, if it is the crown wheel and pinion then would expect it to do it all the time, but maybe a failing bearing could cause such a thing, so yes time to think about a new diff/axle, Rick
