Following on from the thread I posted in last night I decided to take a video as I was pulling back into the work car park from lunch as it was the safest place to do so

You can hear me make my way through the gears quickly and I end up in 3rd doing about 30mph foot to the floor when you can hear the rattle

I def think it is prop shaft now but speaking to the guy at the garage at work he said it could be gearbox Synchro between 3rd and 4th but I have managed to get the rattle in 2nd if I pull off from standing in it, and if I drop to about 35-40mph in 5th I also get it so ruling out Synchros

What I have thought of doing is removing the prop shaft and running in 4WD so I only get front wheel drive and see if I still get the noise, how easy is it to remove the prop?

See what you guys think from the video anyway;

don't think you can remove rear prop as oil will come out of gearbox.

Chances are your UJs are gone, get under it and test for play. Use a bar at each end of the prop.

The prop is pretty firm however when left in gear I can rotate it from left to right a few centimetres is that normal

Can I not drain the gearbox oil out and then remove the prop for testing?

How can I test the UJ's?

I removed my rear prop and the oil didn't come out of anywhere, if it's the UJ, you can change them (I had to) but if you do remove the prop, make sure you mark the flanges so's it goes in the same way. :thumb2

To check your UJ, just underneath and rotate the prop, look at the UJ and see if there's any movement in the joint, mine was totally fooked and had about 1" of play.

How did you repair it?

I'll take a video this afternoon when I finish work

Yes but did you drive it with it removed?

Before you start pulling it apart check the heatshield on the exhaust , the U bracket on downpipe and sidestep footplates if fitted . These all are a source of rattles under the car.

Ugh ! Sounded better with the door shut. I recommend turning the stereo up.

I got nothing sensible, sorry.

Hmmm, My UJ's just vibrated when driving the car, never made a noise like that, it sounds mechanical

Have you tried driving it in 4x4 to see if that make a difference, as mentioned before, check your side steps, heat shields and other fittings but it does sound mechanical, possibly something on the front wheels :nenau:nenau
Just pure guessing.

sounded too fast for prop problems, but cannot identify it, too short can you do it again with a mention on road speed, Rick

listened again, try taking your auto hubs off, perfectly safe and OK to drive a while with them off just try not to get dirt in, Rick

Right, just drove in 4WD and same noise at 30mph 4th Gear, also just took auto hubs off and drove and get same noise

OK so we can rule out front diff, auto hubs, front prop, so now we need to look at the rear so drop the rear prop and remove it from the box, just pulls out, stuff some rag in the gap to limit oil loss, and test for the noise only in a straight line, in 4 wheel so driving front only, if you only get the noise on bends then probably rear diff problem, Rick

I love your diagnostic techniques but I think I've cracked this one, got lucky while I was outside and while I was under the car having a gander, my brother jumps out the van from work and shakes the car to shit me up, while he's doing that I hear a rattle from the drivers side rear hub!!!

Jacked the car up, took the wheel off, got my mom to record and VOILA!!!!! :thumbs:thumbs:thumbs:thumbs:thumbs

What the hell is that!!!!!!!!! And my next question, how do I remove the hub to get it out :D
