Hi all, can anyone help please?

My Terrano is a 1998 2.7TDi, runs on bio and has 144000 miles on the clock and runs like clockwork, it has just had oil, filter, air filter and fuel filter changed a few days ago.

Anyway coming home today on the M62 and it started to splutter and struggle with power, to the point where i thought it was going to stop.

At one point the "engine check" light came on for a moment and went off...

I stopped at the services and lifted the bonnet, not knowing what to expect, but hoping there was something obvious...no obvious leaks, engine oil was fine, fuel filter showed no sign of leak...so a little stumped.

I set off home and it seemed almost okay, struggling a little on the top end or when accelerating to overtake.

Then i got onto an A road and when i booted it it huffed and puffed, almost stopped and the "engine check" light again flashed on momentarily.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

All help and advice is always much appreciated

Cheers

hi bud..

fuel line...

happend to me, just ran new one from tank to filter.. job done.

yep what zippy said happened to me lucky tho i was in a car park :)

could be the fuel filter as some of the cheaper ones can be prone to cause problems

+1. fuel filter blocked, or sucking air from the meriad of usual places!

Hi guys, i have done 250 miles since i serviced it, mostly motorway.

How can i tell if it is the fuel line?
Do i change the whole thing from tank to filter and all the way to the injector pump?
Do i replace it with rubber if so where is the best place to get it?

cheers

I would look at the make of fuel filter you used was it a Nissan one or a high quality aftermarket one such as Mahle?
Has your filter got a priming pump on the top if it has does pumping this till its hard cure the problem for a while.

I have had a bad experience with Boshi filters and now use Nissan or Mahle.

Hi, the make of the fuel filter is "japanparts" and is the same as i used previously.

If it is possibly the filter i will happily change it again, do we know how much the nissan ones are?

cheers

try removing the filter, check it, fill it with diesel, then re fit and prime up, go for a drive, see if its any better.

check the codes, when the mil light popped on, it should have stored the code, may be rogue, but worth a look at.

To see if you've got air in the system you can temporarily put a see through pipe on the OUT side of the filter.
Sometimes the filter itself just needs a bit of oil on the rubber gasket to seal it well.
I'm using bargain basement tractor filters from the farm shop £3 a go :thumbs
No problems :D

I did smear some oil on the rubber seal on the top before i put it on....

How do i read the fault codes, i have read the guide but i can't get my head around it...i do have a code reader that i used on my focus, but i dont think it fits onto the terrano....

Check and clean the mini gause filter (If it has one ) situated in the banjo bolt on top of the fuel pump..............If you have just had the fuel filter changed I bet a tiny amount of crap has got into the feed somehow past the fuel filter when changed(Happened to me when I fitted a new fuel filter.....it only takes a minuscule bit of crap to block it a little and the terrano will run like shite.
Check it anyhow

easy, as it says in the guide, bridge the two connections using a bit of paper clip with some tape around the middle. following the guide, the MIL light will flash a set number of times for each code, witha set pausse between each lot. it basically shows you the code, then starts all over again so you can watch it unitll you are certain you have the correct code.

Pin hole look for wet patch

Happened to me twice now and both times started has a pin hole in diesel line near back arches I never buy cheap diesel filters, £ 8.00 from local motor factors tryed bossh did not seal.

Changed to rubber work from the Tank small plate in boot, cut out about 2 metres 6mm and 8mm
well past back arch follow same route.

Hi all, quick update...

I have replaced fuel filter (no thanks to Nissan Dealer) and bought a new gauze filter, only to be told by Nissan that mine doesnt have one, bought it anyway, and they were right....it doesnt have one...

Anyway replaced fuel filter again and although it is better it is almost the same, loss of power under acceleration and the engine check light flashed on again as well.

So i am gunna have a go at reading the fault code and will update when i have some news

Cheers

Another quick update...

I have read the fault code and it is flashing slowly twice and quickly once, which if i understand it correctly is 21 which reads as:

21
Fuel injection timing solenoid/injector needle lift sensor-malfunction
Wiring, fuel injection timing solenoid, injector needle lift sensor, CKP sensor, air in fuel

Now the air in fuel probably makes most sense, however how do i eradicate any air in the system?
Should i just take it for a run?

Any thoughts?

Also, a little rant about the Main Dealer, i went to one in Howden near selby and asked for the filter, easy peasy, got home and it is the wrong one, mine has a water float thing on the bottom, the one they gave me doesn't.
Anyway rang them up and explained it was wrong and they said okay bring that back and we will order you the correct one, well i live about 50 miles from them and only nipped in there because i was passing.
So what they have said is they will order me one "special order" and they will get it tomorrow and courier it over to me monday or tuesday and i have to post them their original one back...
Sod that i thought, by this time i had mine off and needed another, so i went to another motor factors and bought one...but i am now still having the problems described in the last post..

Cheers

it's probably the fuel lines then on the drivers side rear arch area. It's very common problem area for fuel related issues.

When you say bio, I assume you mean bio-diesel as opposed to veg oil?

Where do you buy it from? The only downside with this stuff is that some folk aren't too careful when it comes to the 'brewing' process so you could easily have copped a shitty fillup if it wasn't a major retailer?

Try running it low and sticking straight diesel in and see if that makes a difference.

Install some clear hose from filter to injection pump to check for air bubbles initially.

Filter head primers love to leak, filters can leak on their top seal, and the chassis rail steel pipes can perforate, as can the rubber stubs ontop the fuel tank.

Once you are totally certain it is not sucking air, then investigate further, but 10-1 this is your problem.

Quick update...

Yesterday i replaced the filter, as already mentioned and went for a run and it was not quite as bad but still suffering slightly.

However, i came out to use the motor today and (touch wood) seems to be okay again now....i have driven it for a few hours and it seems to have cleared.

So as always thank you for all of your help and advice i think the cause was probably a dodgy fuel filter.

Cheers
stephen
