I do not know too much about the 3 but worth checking if the 3 ever came with different pumps ie Bosch/Zexell as on the 2.7 the CPS is in different places, Bosch on the bell housing, Zexel on the timing cover, Rick

Well, not good news. The garage got back to me. The timing chain is broke and most likely a lot of damage up top. Trying to arrange a look at second engine locally or another Terrano. The local garage estimates about £300 labour to swap engine on top of cost of engine.

Any tips on checking out engines that have been whipped out and not readily running?

Also, I was was wondering if I missed any signs of this chain problem approaching just in case I start looking at a whole new Terrano 3.0l?

If a chain is on its way out you'll get a distinct rattle from it at startup and when cold. Saying that the chain on the ZD30 is so understressed it shouldn't need touched during the vehicle lifetime provided oil changes are kept up. Albeit your one was meant to come with FSH it does sound like it's possibly suffered from missed maintenance schedules under a previous owner or possibly incorrect grade of oil :nenau

As Rob said, somethings gone amiss. These chains dont just normally break.
£300 labour doesn't sound bad for an engine swap either.
It cost me that for my clutch and flywheel change recently!

The chaps on here swear by the 2.7 lump.
I don't know if you can consider that as a drop in replacement for the 3.0 instead.:nenau

Either way, really hope this goes your way in the end & soon.

What would be the correct grade of oil for the 3.0?

Maybe the grade might have been wrong and if stated in the service records could see if its been looked after right or wrong stuff used.

Done. Seeing the engine tomorrow. Apparently it's got 100k on it, the fuel pump died and the bloke couldn't find a replacement. No idea if the injectors and other bits are okay so it's a case of "pays your money takes your chance".

he asures it was fine befor ip went.easy pump swap with lump out lol.

Replacement engine has been obtained with thanks to Panelbeater for £225!

Bearing in mind that the cams aren't turning and that the engine turns over too easily we're now working on the theory that the timing chain guides have broken causing damage. The chain looks to be in normal position and not loose. All of the links that I can see are bright shiney which I hear isn't good.

The replacement engine came from a 100K Terrano where the fuel pump had died and a replacement could not be found in time (he's moving out of premises) and the one on mine can be swapped over. Are there any tests or tips in checking other components that can be swapped over prior to the engine being dropped in such as turbo charger etc.?

Check it for oil leaks while it is out, particularly above the starter, much easier to sort them now, Rick
