Hi all, can anyone advise please?

Over the last day or so my truck seems to have developed a noise, that seems to be the thrust bearing.

What are the trucks like to change the clutch?
What sort of price could i expect to pay for a complete clutch kit?
Can anyone recommend a good garage/ mechanic and how much would you say it would cost to get it done by a garage?

Cheers
stephen

£120-£180 clutch kit

4 hours labour

do a gearbox oil change while you are at it I think....Gearbox has to be dropped.

Where in Yorkshire are you? Jims-Terrano can recommend a bloke, who I will be using myself in the next few months....

what makes you think is thrust bearing? clutch kit £160ish if it is the thrust bearing and you can put up with the noise i would run it if clutch is not slipping.

incidentally, mines the same, but now my clutch is JUSt starting to slip a little bit sometimes, so im planning to have mien done in the next few months, im budgetting £350.

the reason i thought the thrust bearing is because when i press the clutch pedal there is a really horrible noise, like a grindy rumbling.....thats probably not very accurate....lol

but it is only there when i press or begin to release the pedal...

I am in bradford

ok Ste, ill get you that guys number, hes not too far from you, or PM Jims-Terrano or Briggie. I know a few folk that have used him and hes reasonable, hes a bit out in the sticks though at a farm....

Well some would say thrust bearing, but I had exactly that problem and it turned out to be the bronze spigot bush that centres the shaft had broken up (thrust bearing was perfect when removed)...still got the bits :doh

Its a nasty DIY job and a half-decent garage would charge anywhere from 400-700 with parts.

i know where he is , but dunno his number

i beleve theres someone in Queesbury.Briggie will know his neck of woods

yeah thats him mate, Queensbury. Ill try get his number from Jim tomorrow!:thumb2

itll cost around £350 all in, but you will probably need to buy the clutch kit first, so long as you are sure you need a new clutch...!?

would appreciate a recommendation if anyone can help.

the thing is its not worth pulling the box out and say replacing the thrust bearing (if thats the problem) and not replacing the whole clutch....

there is a gearbox and clutch specialist near to me called cleckheaton clutch and gearbox centre, i may nip into there and ask their opinion and a price, so i have something to compare with

think it was called roper farm clive

Roper Farm - more info »

absolutely correct :thumb2

if anythings broken up or worn everything else could have been under excess load and any debris could have found its way into moving parts :thumb2

false ecomeny not doing whole thing, imagine paying again in 6mths to take box out again coz sommat else knackered!

Well dropped my truck off at the garage this morning, left it with them and then a couple of hours later they rang me to ask whether it had been brought in for the clutch doing or the gearbox.....

I nipped round to the garage, only to be shown that the noise i have been experiencing was not the thrust bearing or any part of the clutch as it all seems quite new and good quality stuff, however the chap did point out that there seems to be something amiss in the box and he thought it was the bearings inside the bell housing that the main shaft runs on, but he was very surprised when i told him that there was only an unusual noise when the clutch was pressed as he seemed to think the box should be noisy right up to 4th gear....

Anyway, i came away a little shaken and worried by what it is going to cost me...i am still waiting for them to come back to me once they have started to investigate the box.....

tdi boxes the stronger one i believe, older td one had faults, maybe someones not checked oil or put wrong oil in,thats a hit you could do without mate.

well....did you have any gear problems?? Rick will probably know something more about his I suspect. Im a little confused though,,,

I cannot see how it can be anything to do with the box, as once you have depressed the clutch peddle, the center plate stops and so does the box if you have noises at this point it can only be the thrust bearing or more seriously crankshaft thrust bearing as the crank is now being pushed forwards if the bearing has badly worn some metal to metal contact could be occurring, but this is very rare, Rick
