We set off from Haines to do the 150 mls to Haines Junction going along side the Chilkoot river, the road was tarmaced initially but after a few miles turned to a dirt road(why do they do that?)we left British Columbia and back into Yukon Territory, which meant showing passports as we had to do between Chicken and and Scagway at the Border and of course in Canada they are metric and US are imperial so we used litres in Canada and us gallons everywhere else same with canadian dollars and us dollars, very confusing when you turn up at fuelling stops, which there were only a few and them 6' 12" mounties packing pistols and funny hats, asking me did i have drugs or anything sharp in the RV, and i had bought a Bowie Knife in Scagway Ooops and we had a drawer full of cutlery, then he asked if we had any fruit or meat as this was prohibited,Ooops again we had just shopped in Scagway, No we said tounge in cheek and off we went passport stamped

He had the town mayor on his payroll,he had a gang of thugs who swindled money and gold from unsuspecting people at his brothels and gambling casinos.some thought him to be a Robin Hood character robbing the rich to give to the poor,he even built a church, but there were a growing number of people who were against his ways and organised a meeting at the Juneau Wharf ,to decide a plan to rid Scagway of Soapy smith there were men posted outside and armed to prevent anyone of Soapy's men entering, when Soapy heard of this meeting he went down to the Wharf with his winchester(his favourite weapon) and challenged the men posted outside and one of them was called Frank Reid, there was a shootout and Frank shot Soapy through the heart with his revolver but not before Soapy had let off a shot and wounded frank in the groin, he took 12 days to die a painful death. They are both buried in the cemetery outside of town,Frank Reid with a granite headstone and Soapy with just a plain marker.

Cant quite make it out, was Frank Reid 64 when he died? quick on the draw for an older fella :clap

We eventually arrived at Haines Junction, it's the juction between Haines and Anchorage and Fairbanks, which is the Alascan highway or Alcan it stretches for 1500 mls from Dawson Creek British Columbia as far as Delta Junction and it took 7months, it was built as a supply route during the 2nd world war period 1942,because the Japanese had captured some of the Aleutian islands off the Alaska coast.
