Hi everyone.

Right. I got my car back yesterday. Had the watepump fixed. But now got a battery not holding a charge problem.... If it not one thing it's another....

Anyway, have managed to get the fault codes from the car this morning. I think I got fault codes: 14, 18 and 48.

I did video the mil flashes and have got it posted on my YouTube account (I have all the exciting videos...)

You can view it here...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL-KDwdqd28&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Have a look and see if you come up with the same faults.

Anyway. Has anyone got any suggestions on a fix for my faults.

14: Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) circuit malfunction.
18: Fuel quantity adjuster/position sensor malfunction
48: Accelerator pedal position (APP) switch/fuel injection pump position sensor - circuit malfunction.

Cheers Gary

Should I scream cry or run for the hills...........

What you need to do is clear them, go for a run and recheck them

Throttle pedal sounds like a possibility tho

well, with these codes, I think my suggestion of the pedal should be your next route. The sensor at the top of the pedal may need a clean or is faulty. Have a look, ensure the connector is tight and wires ok etc.

When My pedal went it threw up other codes too, same as yours, all went with new pedal fitted.

actually, to add to this, check the ground wires in the engine bay for the pedal-they are on the drivers side block, above the dip stick-two small wires bolted down. undo them, clean, and re fit...

If u need a throttle peddle I have one to sell u

Ok. Just got codes cleared. Just trying to get it started now....... Bloody motor lol...... As soon as started I will take it for a run and then re check codes and report back.

Cheers Gary

One way to verify the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is when the vehicle comes to rest the revs should drop by 100 rpm after 1~2 seconds at stop.

Ok. Got started....... Another story altogether that is...

Anyway, went for a run and have just rechecked the fault codes. Whooo. I got 1 fault code showing now and not 3. The only thing is that it's a new code altogether lol. Got fault code 47 which is crankshaft position (CKP) sensor- incorrect signal.

Must admit. The car is running loads better that it ever did. Even on a first star of the day. Still won't win any races though.

Right just this poxy bloody battery issue to solve now....... Any auto electricians in the house........?

clean the ckp as well, but on a 99, it might be close to needing replacing anyway..

Ok, silly question..... Where would I find the CKP???

Got to recharge the battery again before I can start it again lol......

I'm sure it's not the battery being ****ed but an earthing fault..... What else could drain a battery down so quickly.....

Ckp = crank sensor

It's back of engine, top of bellhousing

starting the car will drain the battery quick if the battery is at fault or the alternator isn't charging correctly.

That's where the manual say's it is but on the older engines as me and Clivvy discovered it's on the front of the engine behind the fan belt below thermostatat area.

Some top advice here mate there's not much that I can add apart from to check the terminals on the battery and check the terminals on the Alternator and also check the belt tension

If all looks ok there, I'd be going with another battery, have you got a spare or one you can borrow for the purpose of testing?

I have another battery. But it is not as powerful as the one on the car, but it is relatively new.

Could I still have an alternator problem if I'm not getting any lights (red not charging light) coming up on dash.

I don't want to go all guns blazing at the garage only to be proved wrong.....

Will try the battery in morning and try to check terminals after work

Cheers Gary

Could be-you need to test your alternator, have you got a multimeter?

You could also have bad earth.

Def sounds like an alternator issue to me mate if you've got the light coming up

As said before get the Multimeter out, battery should read about 12vish when engine not running and anywhere between 13-14v if the Alternator is working correctly, if you get these readings then the Alternator sounds as if it's working correctly and your fault lies with the battery

From past experience though whenever I've seen the light on the dash it means new Alternator time, if you do end up going down that route and doing it yourself then make sure to renew the belt while you have it off

Think you must of miss read... Lol. I'm NOT getting a warning light on the dash while driving or running the engine. This leads me to believe that the it's not a charging or battery issue. I think it's an earthing issue.

I spent a while this afternoon taking off the main earth lean and refitting. Also the earth lead from engine block to inner wing. But the inner wing one could not be removed as on hard. But it does look bloody rusty. I was going to see if I could get another length of earth Cable and rerun it to another point in the engine bay.

As you may have already gathered I'm not the most technically minded. Lol

Anyway, short of those 2 points where else should I be looking for a major earthing wire..... Or should I be looking at some other wire as a possibe problem...... Aarrgghhhh this is doing my head in.

As a test/check, try connecting a single jump lead between the battery -ve and the engine block and see if that helps starting....
