Having had a demonstration of what MM can do, thanks to Sniffer,
his pda, gps adaptor and laptop I am sorely tempted.

So just wondering if anyone else has it and what set up do you use.

I do have an old Orange SPV500 phone which might just run it, one
certainly appears on the MM site, I also have a bluetooth gps receiver.

I have an OS mapping software program called Mapwise from Hillwalker
though it doesnt appear to either offer gps input if run on a lappy or any
way to transfer to a pda or smart phone.

Seen some snazzy phones which offer various versions of Windows Mobile
and some even have gps built in. Does MM have minimum requirements
in a device as their site doesnt appear to define.

hello

at the moment i have an old dell inspiron laptop running MM. i brought a cheap(ish) gps receiver (Locosys Genie GT-31) and linked the laptop to that. i also brought a 12v laptop charger aswell. i was passenger in a mates car and for a basic kit it worked well on our last greenlane trip, its just a little cumbersome to be resting on your lap especially when your going over some rutty ground. i might rig up a small touchscreen and mount to the dash in my car, and then have the laptop strapped down in the back seats

btw, i brought a bluetooth version of the gps so i can link it to my nokia n70 which runs tomtom. the bluetooth isnt fantastic though and oftens loses connection with the phone

I use a Mitac Mio P350 PDA. Small screem but bigger than a phone, portable.

thanks for feedback.

Pal that saw Sniffer's set up has offered me atleast on loan his old
mobile, a t-mobile mda compact III which does a fair impression of
a pda mobile with integrated gps. hopefully will take my sim card
or if not may use as just a gps pda.

my b/t gps is about size of a large remote key fob, and i think can
charge from usb, just not sure if will transfer data by cable to as
reckon one less problem if can avoid bluetooth.

toyed with using laptop and invertor but at 15" screen as suggested
is job for navigator. have wondered about these new sub notebooks
from asus and others, Eee pc, note some have solid state hard drives
so presume more robust in car but still need somewhere to mount
securely and store out of site too. note some run on linux so not sure
if MM software will transfer, any ideas??

finally think fallen in in love with new mobile from samsung, I900.
large touch screen, gps, 3g, wifi, upto 16 gb on board room for 8gb
sd card, windows mobile 6 i think, ready to run various nav software...

I'm looking into this too. A mate of mine with a Fronty has an incar PC made from bits of old desktop, a touch screen and a proper in car powersupply. The fronties have a nice water proof pouch/pocket in the boot so the hardware is in there. He's running it as Memory map, satnav and MP3 player so as done away with his stereo and mounted the screen in dash. Am wonderng about doing the same with my new T2, its got the Nissan 1.5 (i think) DIN stereo so hoping can get it in there somehow. Old motherboards and smaller hard drives are easy to come by, te power supplies are about £40, its just the touch screen thats a bit costly but a 7", 8" or 9" screen has to e te way to go to do it properly. Have done the laptop on te seat lark and it nearly cost me a laptop in a ford, (nearly cost me 2 phones and a canon 400D DSLR too but the dried out), but fortunately it stayed on the seat.

If using a laptop its better to get a 12v power supply for them than run through an inverter, I got mine from CPC for about £15.

This it what mine looks like, needs to be out of the truck quickly too for the Geocaching that goes on

hi does anyone that has MM have pc and pda requirements lists.

guess works on hp ipaq as per sniffer, what does anyone else use.

any ideas if will work on a palm, and what about windows mobile
believe there are atleast 3 versions :- 5,6 and 2003.

also how much space does a map or part of take in a pda memory
(card) ie how much map per gigabyte, or what does an os sheet
equate to please.

Use mine with small laptop which fits inside parcel shelf on top of dash, rests on a piece of 10mm mdf which is fastened to grabrail also use gps reciever.Loaded all maps into lappy as it was bought just for this.

Like the sound of this, would be good to see some pictures and specs HB?

ok so dug around on mudclub ectronics section.

says need pocket pc for MM so Palms are out, need
something with mobile windows it seems. also it
needs to be able to sync with pc to download maps.

I think it needs to have Win Mobile 3 or newer.
The sync program can be doenloaded for free from Microsoft if the device you buy doesn't come with one already.

Myself, I thought about using MM on a pda but found the small screen difficult, so I just have a 12v power supply and use the laptop with MM and a usb Gps device in the car.

Hi all, much to my other halfs disgust I cheerfully spend hours "faffing about" with electronic gadgets.

I have an ipaq hx4700. Theyre a few years old now (had mine 3) but were powerful robust units when they came out and well ahead of their time. I have win mobile 5 on mine and if you want one you should get a good one off ebay for around £100 and spare parts are widely available. I have a 4gb cf microdrive and a 2gb sd card fitted (it has dual slots) never ran out of memory yet. You can also run it on Win Mob 2003 but I dont think theres a proper mob 6 for it.

The largest map I've saved from Fugawi is about 1mb if I remember but I'll check.

They have blue tooth and wireless to link to all the accesories and gps locators. The advantage of course is you can then update those as you go.

On mine I have easily ran Mem Map, Fugawi , Tom Tom & Igo.

I can thoroughly recomend Igo for sat Nav and Fugawi for OS mapping.

I tried the laptop route (using a toshiba notebook) and it just wasnt as robust or convenient as a pda on a decent mount (though I can sympathise with the easier to see comment  )

Hope this is some help but of course its all personal choice :p

Just arranged to get an old laptop with broken screen and am gong to order touch screen to run it through. Already have 12v universal power supply for laptop so now I just need to decide where to put it. Under the back seat is one place but not sure about that low down with my propensity for water.

wow i'm hooked. managed to download MM trial AND install it on pal's pda phone. Love the fly thru 3d feature on pc, just need to save for the software now....

think only concern is actually viewing small ish display in car. which i reckon is about half size of tomtom. maybe a proper pda is the answer.

rbrt, pda is probably the answer. Through loads of faffing about (my missus description for my technical inquisitiveness and development  ) I'd agree phone screens are generally a bit on the small side but pda's can be quite a bit bigger whilst still mounting neatly somewhere.

Only thing I'd add is if like me you like neatness in an installation go for a mainstream type pda preferably not new (unless you've got loads of cash  ) because whatever you want to do there'll almost certainly be a bit on ebay you can cheaply get or modify to do it

Have fun.

cheers daved, been watching a few like your on flee bay. also saw a compaq 3970 or something complete with a navman gps sleeve and other goodies go for not a lot earlier in week.. think that had a 3.8" screen.

noticed with your having cf and sd slot could pop in a cf gps card too.
tempting to get one loaded with wifi if only to surf at home from settee.

tempted by these sub netbooks, with solid state hard drive. now if something happened to my old p4 lappy would use vouchers on a little un.

mm

hi .
i have an old dell laptop running windows 98 se.
its got disc drive ,usb.
sat doing nothing woundered if it would run m.m.
rgds.iandouglas

It all depends on the spec of the dell and the version of mm you get hold of. It may all work to your advantage as older versions of mm are not as desirable on ebay , though generally just asd good as new ones
