If your starter motor is original it will be getting tired, if you have checked all cable joints and have a good battery then chance the starter, they are very reliable little work horses but after 18 odd years !!! Rick

As solarman and mav96 pointed ou, it was my starter that was at fault.

I removed the old unit, mainly working through the drivers side arch. As the that side was jacked up im too small to reach over, into and down to the starter. Even with a stool. :D

Was actually a nice straight forward job. Thanks to a member ceny I followed their mini guide I found. Heres what I did.

12mm nut holding the positive from the battery to be removed first.

Then took off the switch from ignition which is just a push connector.

Removed some of the harness as I figured it would give me a bit more space to slide the starter out. I think i ended up disconnecting the oil pressure sensor, offside wheel sensor, cps on back of the engine, and the two sensors run along the transfer box. This allowed me to pull the harness up into the engine bay to avoid any snagging.

Motors was held on with two 14mm bolts which again I got to through the space in the arch. I tried a socket first but lost it into a nice gap that sits between the motor and the sump. Was much easier with a 14mm rachet spanner.

Once free aim the nose upwards and it fit nicely between the engine and body to be removed.

Good man!!!!

Starter motors are a doddle with a body lift :naughty

Bench tested the old starter. So positive to big nut on the solenoid, negative to body of starter. Then bridge the positive to the small space connector which is the signal from ignition.

Solenoid was fine as the pinion extended everytime but the shaft turned only briefly and very slowly. So i pulled it apart to have a look.

The starter comes apart easily. 2 10mm bolts that hold the coil? To the motor. Then 2 phillips hold the cover section for the brushes. Small circlip has to be removed to allow the shaft to come off.

Followed the instructions in the manual, testing continuity and resistance between all the components. These all checked out fine.
Some of the brushes where chipped so I tried filling them down so they made proper contact with the computator I think its calle. Main issue I belive was that the insulation on the copper wire connections between the magnets had failed and the I think that this allowed a short.

The rest of the magnet is encased in some rubber/plastic but this area at the top had come away from the magnet . Only a guess though as what do I know but it didnt look right.

All the brushes were in a similar state so they must take a beating inside the motor.

Anyways new one works a treat. Transformed stating. I cant believe how much of a difference there is.

I still have the old unit so mayb I can try and repair it so thag I have a spare for future use.

Stupid question but a body lift increses the height between the chassis rails and the body of the car? So it floats higher increasing that space to work through.

If thats the case I feel sorry for those with no body lift and normal sized arms. Must be hard work getting in there. :D:D:bow

Correct :) I too feel their pain lol

Been a bit slack last couple of months getting my work sorted and under control. Now thats all finished I have alot more spare time on my hands to get on with some jobs.

Got new improved drop links on the way, plenty of leds that ive seen other fit in their posts. Got plans to get a second battery for just incase starting times. Finally gonna get the rest of the underneath cleaned up and try and start a few bits of welding.

Been chasing a starting issue that cropped up last week, turning over but just not firing. Took 4 prolonged attempts or a sniff of easy start and shes off. Big clouds out the back for a few seconds then back to stable revs?

One strange issue did occur after getting her going one morning I couldnt rev the engine. Foot to the floor it was peaking about 900-1k. Left it iddling for 10 mins and still no difference, so left her in the street till after work. Changed the filter, bled the lines and I was able to rev freely. What was weird was that I had no fault codes. Before I swapped the fuel lines code 21 would pop up when under load or if I had and issue but nothing with this.

So I ve chucked a new filter in, tested my glow plugs which are only a few months old. Getting 00.8 - 01.0 on the lowest scale so no open loops. Next will be to check tank and hose connections.

Im ruling out fuel as I got hold of some svo which I mixed with diesel n some petrol for the cold weather but im thinking it must be air or feed drainnig whiles shes stood as the rest of the time driving I have no issues.

So the hunt continues..

To this. Dont think my picture taking ability has done the led any justice. The mid and boot lights are so much better. Can actually find things i drol in the car when its dark out.

I upgraded my interior candles to some nice bright LEDs.
Shows up how dirty my car is inside:lol

Definately no hiding the dirt anymore lol, may even have to clean the inside.

So my heater has reverted to only working on max setting. Had put a new resistor and filter in only a few months ago so will pull it back out and see whats happening.

Bit more starting trouble this morning. Im beginning to wonder if there is a drain on the battery overnight? As it was sluggish to turn over but again Ive replaced the starter which was the cause of my problems before. Can the cold really effect batteries that much? Best get on research how to hook up two batteries and how to trace for drains on me battery.

Got some liqui moly delivered so set it up running from a jar. Going to drive for a few days before n see if theres much effect, but a short blast last night did seem to be running nicer. Could all be in my mind.

Spent the rest of my free time trying to get some welding practice before i tackle any thing on the wagon.
