An opportunity for someone to offer exchange front diffs, there are plenty of un worn front diffs of the earlier Mavs and Terranos, ie those with Auto Hubs.

Just for interest, how do you lock the front diff?

This is the good point, it is AUTOMATIC when you select 4WD Rick

What I do not understand is, Sorry for being thick...

But surely it is just like the LSD, in that it only locks until there is sufficient force to cause it to slip. I could not see anything that actually "Engages" it, to actually lock it up.

It is so simple this is what makes it, planet gears are completely replaced by the sprung loaded lokkas, which have tapered housings that the crucifix engages with and this action forces the inner parts of the lokka out to the drive shaft parts causing full engagement of the lokka, it is that simple, and it works, Rick

It's like a ratchet from a socket set, its always locked until the outer wheel needs to cover more ground, then it ratchets

Ie its probably only locked going backwards with no freeing up

Tbh I'd love rick to do a vid showing real life action :)

No No No No nothing like at all, it works by the cruciform which is the turning force of the diff forcing apart of the two parts of the lokka which are already engaged with light spring pressure, all the time there is load on the cruciform from DRIVE then the lokka will be force ably separate the two halves causing diff lock, remove the DRIVE and the lokka goes into light spring mode enabling different rotational speeds as the two parts ratchet around each other, forward or reverse makes no difference, Rick

Just got mine, cleared space in the garage and going to get stuck in tomorrow.
Been following you, Solarman, makes it a bit clearer. A picture is worth a 1000 words or so they say.
Only question is on the shims but maybe I'll be lucky, if not I guess she's off the road for a couple of days or until I can sort the correct thickness. Fingers crossed.

Here is a question...

Could the vehicle still be run without the front diff fitted?

Equally, when I adjusted the front wheel bearings, it looked as though the front drive shaft into each hub was doing nothing, does it carry any load, and could the vehicle be run without the drive shafts, fitted at the front? OR will the wheels fall off:eek::eek:

This would give people ages to sort out the mod to the front diff without having to take the vehicle off the road. Best time of the year now to do it. Unless we are expecting any more snow...:doh

This is only a question, I just wondered.:nenau

Warning:-
Don't even try it unless you know the answer....

best regards,
Rustic

I'd get a s/h diff and work on that at your leisure then when done sell your original one :thumb2
If anyone wants one I may have just the thing lol

As long as you ensure the wheel locks are disengaged and the drive shafts are properly supported or removed altogether I can't see any reason why you couldn't.
I don't plan to try except to make room for other things if I need to. I have other means of transport at my disposal.

I think the driveshaft centres the wheelbearing, so u can't run without the cv

The wheel bearings are taper roller and independent of the driveshaft/cv.
The wheel end of the cv is supported by the hub and a needle roller bearing.
You would need the block the hole left by the shaft though to prevent bits and pieces finding their way into the bearings.

Perfectly OK to run without the front diff, and if only for a few days no need to remove the shafts, just disable the auto hubs (in case they bind up and turn a shaft) the diff end can be secured with cable ties, but Mr plod may have a different view and if you are doing motor way work I would remove them completely, just stick a lump of rag in the DS hole to keep the dirt out and no wading, Rick

My fixed hubs mean I'd have to run no shafts if I took diff out, but ricks suggestion of bunging holes sounds good :)

to be honest it would be wise to remove them as only relying on a small circlip to hold them in place, and the consequences of one exiting the hub do not bear thinking about, and do not forget the front prop shaft as well also put the rear support member back, it is part of the chassis stiffening, Rick
