Ok guys I'm just about at the end of my whits with this dam Terrano. I feel real bad because I think that I have bought a pup.

The noise wasn't there straight away I'm sure but has got to the point where I'm concerned driving it. It's like a humming noise with a vibration. Starts around 40mph and gets worse the faster you go. Seems as though it doesn't start straight away but seems as though I have to drive for a few minutes before it starts.

So far I've changed or bigbunny has changed the drag link, both track rods and the NS idler. Then had it tracked and all four wheels balanced.
Had a stud replaced that snapped. Had the rear brakes cleaned and checked. The rear diff oil changed, this was described as furry by the garage. Front wheel bearings checked and adjusted.

Tonight after the latest work she is still making the noise though I'm not sure if it is not as bad but difficult to tell due to weather and road conditions tonight.

As a last resort Judd suggested swapping all four wheels over from my old truck, the tyres on the truck at the moment seem just about new.

Any ideas or advice welcome, I'm really hacked off and rapidly becoming skint.

Well, don't give up, chances are you'll kick yourself when you find out what it was. :thumb2

Dunno if they are changeable but when on a budget sometimes my garage will change front wheels to rear and visa versa to test for different noise/buckles ect.
This would be an entirely free mod to try :nenau

Apart from that it depends how much time you and someone else have.

If your not careful you could spend an unnecessary fortune so go easy

The steering joints were fubard so they needed changing anyway.

Proper hacked off, I nearly bought a skoda rooster but hate the looks so found this instead. Hacked off that I bought it and feel bad as I've know I've let my family down.

It drives ok right? :nenau

You will tackle the issue but sometimes diagnostic work can be a right pain in the backside. Like i said though, once you find it chances are you'll laugh about it :D

How much did you pay for it out of interest?

No it doesn't drive ok, the vibration is so disturbing I haven't driven it for best part of a month other than to test after each bit of work.

You've not let your family down Jim & trust me skoda's aren't as good as a lot of people say they are neither are some of the VW engines as I know people who work for both dealerships & they don't own either make of motor:augie
It'll be a pain but as you have another set of wheels it might be worth swapping them over to see if the sound go's, i've noticed i've got a lot more under bonnet noises on this one compared to my last one but i'm sure it's down to the lack of sound proofing on the bonnet. Are the UJ's ok ?

As rock pointed out i don't actually have any sound proofing atall :lol

Thought my terrano sounded like a tank.

Yeah dude dont give up, just keep trying little bits. Who's the most local to you with some knowledge?

Rick is a good dude to visit :thumb2

One problem I have is a lack of confidence these days, at one time I'd be jumping in and getting on with it. Also I won't have a weekend off now until July and the other truck will need mot soon too.
As the song goes "if I could turn back time" I would of saved my money.

Where are you dude? I suggest paying another visit to someone so they can have a good look.

I can definately say that rick knows his way around these trucks too well :lol

As does lazy ferret :thumb2

when you say humming, what kind of humming? just a hum or a whistle kind of hum, if you get what i mean, is it in all gears? or just 4th? is there a definite vibration, what are the revs at when vibration occurs?

got a similar noise which sounds just like yours, pretty much done the same as you,new draglink, track rods, bearings checked, greased and adjusted :nenau
new front brake discs and pads and its still there.
hard to pin point the noise but it sounds like its coming from the drivers side front.
going to strip and service the brakes again to make sure ive not got a sticky caliper pin.
I thought it was the tyres at first but the noise is only on the front.

Shut up now!!!!!!!!!!! Let your family down????????? Silly Man

It will be something stupid buddy, I'm going to go straight in there agaian with my 2p worth given the description you've given and say wheel bearing again

If you haven't got this sorted by next week, I'm coming to you myself window or no window!!!!

that was my first thought but they where checked and adjusted for mot on mine.
might just bite the bullet and buy some new ones.

just had a look at milners website and they are 25 quid a side, guess what I will be doing at the weekend.

Any chance you can put standard size wheels and tyres on.Just to eliminate, the ones you are using now. My number two truck hums over 30 mph.Just a thought. .

when I went out with Jim on Saturday, I was able to see what he meant. The vibration comes right through the floor into the cabin, and to me, it seems like the drives hafts...something turning but obviously these have fixed hubs.

The reason I think its something turning, the drive shaft or prop shafts etc is my neighbour bought a Stilo Abarth from ebay a while back. Advertised as having a bad vibration over 30mph. He got it VERY cheap, and we diagnosed the driveshaft and it was. The effect was very similar to Jims issue

what do you think? Oil change?

See, the help is there for you dude, :thumb2

Start with the free or the very cheap options and, if no good further help can come down. Just keep diagnosing what you can, and if your stuck that's what the forum is for :)

For gods sake don't go and buy a skoda :(

My skoda blew up 2 weeks after the warranty (3 months and 2 weeks) :lol

mine are manual hubs, which have also been stripped and re greased.
next time I am out I will try and record the sound so you can have a listen jim.

What about if I send you down a set of Auto's in the post for you to try?

Send them back when you are done with them :nenau ?

I had a vibration... humming noise at certain revs, what this was, was the plastic under engine cover, one of the bolts was loose, in fact the threads had stripped, so I replaced all with stainless steel M6 bolts and large penny washers.

Sorted ...:thumb2

Another vibration was the exhaust clamp on the gearbox, the top M8 nut on the "U" clamp comes loose... solution, an extra M8 nut on each side to act as a lock nut.

Sorted ...:thumb2

Well these are cheap fixes, as most are on these trucks.

Took it to work today and only managed to get up enough speed for long enough on way home but that was only a short stretch. I dipped clutch and put in neutral and the noise and vibration was still there so I'm reckoning that rules out the gearbox. I couldn't be sure but it seems to get worse after I've taken a right hand bend which to me is pointing towards the diff. It's a deep heavy hum or rumble.
I'm still right miffed with the car and myself for buying it not that this was noticeable even just after I'd picked it up.

I'm going to take it for a run up the motorway tonight when there will be less traffic so that I can get it up to 60 to 70 and see exactly what it is like after yesterday's work.
