what year is your truck, and what maf is fitted,

anyone else tell me about heat exchangers, are you using anything to warm veggie or just running as is?

1999 registered but is a 98 year build
Hitachi Maf
Zexel fuel pump
Water heat exchanger
88 degree themostat
20 lt tank in boot
closed loop on fuel line return
x1 12v solenoid
afew bits of pipe and clips switch and temperature gauge
and a lot of time getting it right........sorted

when did he do his calulations 70p alitre when using svo it costs at least 93p/l from makro which is the cheapest i can find:nenau

theres people on there who will advise better and cheaper kit

That is the biggest pile of crap.....and known on the bio diesel sites as a yorkshire bomb...!!

One of the biggest problems with that is that you are firstly heating the oil to 55-65 degrees and then adding methoxide, which is made up of methanol and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) so you potentially have highly flammable fumes in an open container....the smallest of sparks and you have a Yorkshire Bomb...

To be honest if you were to price that up you could manufacture that yourself for about £100 or there abouts

If you are considering getting into making bio then my advice would be get some advice, see if you can have a look at some ones setup and ask lots of questions...and even observe a batch being made if you can

Also, something else to consider...avoid a plastic conical container as a processor...due to the heat generated whilst making a batch

Yes you have to be careful and use your head ( proper ventilation, correct temp, mix the methoxide gently etc) just research it well and do it right

Plastic containers arnt a prob though - if you get it that hot your dead!

I did a lot until I realised in a car worth £500 it's just not worth it when it runs on filtered waste oils of various types for a fraction of the cost.

Fuel mixes

Hello.
Just wondering if anyone has any info. reference using domestic heating oil/ kerosene plus whatever additive is needed, (only using the truck well away from public highways) They should be able to run on kerosene but I have heard that some amount of engine oil needs to be added. Has anyone any thoughts as to whether this would be a viable option for private off-road usage,and what implications are there for the engine.

i have used kero in different off roaders with a hint of used engine oil (filtered) to lube the pump. never had a prob with it - someone i know has used it neat with no probs in a shogun for a long time!
if you can get red deisel off a friendly local farmer all the better because its about the same price

Thanks for the info. I guessed that kerosene would work ok but not sure of potential long term problems with lubrication of pump,etc. Had thought of farm diesel, but it is dyed and therefore may leave contamination/discolouring if the truck was ever to go back to highway use.

im not saying kero is ideal for long term use but i havnt had any probs.

if you use red just drop the drain plug on the tank if it goes back on road. this way if it got dipped there should be no trace. it doesnt stain the system - its just in the fuel

Am I right in thinking that I can just filter used Veg oil and whack it straight in my fuel tank and also run a bit of diesel in there it will run ok?

I can currently get about 20 litres a week from the canteen at work lol

No it has to be dewatered and filtered then u also need some sort of heat exchanger to heat oil to Before it gets to engine other wise it could go back to jelly y don't u use it to make Bio diesel that's the best thing for waste veg oil

Yes and no. As has been said, you need to get the water out - both free water and suspended water that gets there during the cooking process. Get yourself over to the forums on vegtableoildiesel.co.uk and read up on stuff relating to wvo.

Basically cold filter it through 1 micron filters (work up to that as then the lumps of sausage and chips don't block the finest filters) heat it up in a drum and then leave to settle. Drain the water and other 'stuff' that drops out from the bottom.

If you don't want to make bio, stick in into another drum and add 10-20% petrol and leave to settle again (watch how you handle petrol of course!). Petrol will thin the oil to about the same viscosity as diesel and it'll stop it freezing in winter. It also will strip out any water you haven't got out before and some lacquers (hence the suggestion you mix and settle before adding to the tank). Running oil works well in the 2.7 engine, but there are always risks involved.

If you'd rather make bio then take the dried oil and process in a GL type processor as described so well on said site.

You must pay HMRC duty on vegetable oil when you put it into your tank. There is no allowance for VEG.
ONLY biodiesel is exempt of DUTY and VAT (up to 2500 litres per calender year) if you make it yourself.

If you get dipped with veg, you could be in trouble

If I was to run VEG, in addition to filtering I would also heat it up and leave it to settle for a few days, drain off the bottom water and crud.
Then add 5% petrol in summer more in winter.

Don't forget to add an inline filter as the veg will clean out the fuel tank and lines of rubbish. I put mine just before the main fuel filter

when did they change about the veg:nenau
