Is your lift pump not in the injector pump like the 2.7s, I have a petrol and the electric pump is in the tank but thought that all the diesel versions used a lift pump on the main injector pump, in which case look for air ingress, Rick

yep

Sorry Davenclaire, fuel gauge unit already back in the tank. Drilled a hole in the plastic till I hit the metal and then soldered a wire onto that. That should do the trick. At the moment only 12 liters of diesel in the tank so need to get some more to see if I get a reading.

that should do it

It is me having a blond moment. :doh

I need to prime the engine first before trying to start it, which can be a fairly lengthy process but I will give it a go tomorrow.

I will keep you updated. Thank you for all the help.

Consider the following:-
Fill the fuel filter with diesel, then use the primer pump.
If there is air still in the system, you could spray some WD40 into the air intake whilst cranking (air filter removed).
This will allow the engine to run, and then the pump will rev, thus purging out the air.

It should start straight away, and within a few seconds the engine will be running on diesel.

If not, fuel is not getting through. So look for another fault.

This worked on a diesel Vectra, when the RAC man got it going, the battery did not turn over the engine enough, and so it was flattened.
The fault was air in the fuel lines. (It was an air leak, but the fuel ran back causing an airlock.)

So I would think this proceedure should work.:thumb2
Any comments guys...? :nenau:nenau:nenau

Priming the fuel filter was no problem at all. However it still doesn't want to start as there is no fuel getting through to the injectors. Removed the fuel line at the No.1 injector and it is as dry as it gets.

Tried the WD40 method but to no avail.

Anybody got an idea how to remove the air from the injector pump and fuel lines up to the injectors?

Is there anything at all coming through the injector when you turn the engine over ? If you crack all the injectors half a turn you should see something coming through.

No, nothing coming out at the injectors at all. :(

Removed the fuel line that runs from the filter to the injector pump (IP) and there is fuel coming out at the IP end. Removed the fuel lines that run up to the injectors at the IP side and there is no fuel coming out of the IP. Even when cranking the engine.

Removed the lines at the back of the IP of which one goes back to the fuel tank and there is fuel coming out when I press the lift pump.

So either there is an air lock somewhere in the IP or it has packed up. The latter seeming unlikely as I switched of the car 9 months ago and now try to start it. In the meantime nothing has been done to the engine block.

Just been thinking. Could this have something to do with the NATS system and that is blocking of the fuel?

Or should I still get fuel when I use the lift pump?

NATS can stop the fuel, if it is the NATS at fault and its not an electronic pump, then its easy enough to disable/bypass.
You need to identify the fuel shut off solenoid wire and do your own thing with it!

How do you know if it is NATS at fault?

Never used NATS and just open/close car with the key thats about it. Don't even have the controls for NATS.

Do you have a red NATS LED atop the dashboard ?

Should flash slowly when armed. If when you are attempting to start it flashes quickly or is lit solid, then the immobiliser is definately not allowing it to start.

Could you tell us what IP is fitted to this motor ? A pic would be great...

The NATS red flashing light on the dashboard goes out when I try to start the car. So I take it that that is not the problem.

Tried to take some photo's but it is dark so not the best quality.

To rule out that the Fuel Cut Off solenoid is faulty I removed it but to no avail. Unfortunately the idiot who installed it tightened the nut on the top (holding the wire) so tight that the top half of the solenoid broke off trying to undo the nut. So off to the dealer it is!

Looks like the zexel / VP37 to me !

Removing the plunger from the stop solonoid will at least prove the engine will run, if only at tickover if there is a further electronic problem....

I have removed the Solenoid but when removed the shaft still stays in place in the fuel pump. Tried to pull it out but it doesn't want to come out.

Is this just a case of giving it a hard pull? Should this shaft come out? According to the documentation it should but can you confirm?

At the moment i have removed the solenoid, then I get a spring and then the shaft which is stuck in the fuel pump. I can move it up and down but thats it.

The stop plunger should lift easily out of the pump to reveal a black rubber 'stopper' on the bottom of it. sounds like yours is stuck..
