The welding is not brilliant but good enough for the job at hand.

Yesterday installed the oil cooler, front bumper, headlights and indicator clusters.

Today I went to my local garage to have the grease seal on the rear near side half shaft changed. Which unfortunately turned into whole days work instead of just an hour or so.

First you need to get the ABS sensor off the half shaft which we did by heating it up. After a bit of heat it came off really easily. Then it is a case of removing the lock nut (56mm) which is torqued to 460nm and it needed a little convincing. In the Nissan paperwork it then requires you to remove the half shaft from the hub with a puller. We used a hydraulic press and we had 46 tons of pressure applied and it still would not come out. A little bit more and it finally came out.

Next job was to remove the bearing so we could get to the grease seal. Unfortunately when removing the half shaft from the hub the wheel bearing split with one part sitting on the half shaft. Again, the hydraulic press was used and at around 32 tons of pressure the bearing housing let go of the half shaft.

Unfortunately I did not expect to need a new bearing so that has to be ordered. Either with the dealer or with a local bearing company but they expect that the bloke who deals with automotive bearings has packed up shop till the new year. They will try him tomorrow again and otherwise it will be a trip to the dealer at twice the cost of the other company :banghead

I had forgottoen my camera today so I hope to take some photo's when we put it all back together.

Here is a photo of the new oil cooler in its final place. Where the top hose comes through the body work has to be tidied up.

Unfortunately no new photo's. In a hurry to get out of the house today and left it at home again!! :doh

The good news is that the axle shaft is back together with a new bearing. The bearing company from my previous post could not supply a new bearing. And when I phoned the Nissan dealer on wednesday they said that they could supply a new bearing by friday if ordered before thursday early afternoon. However when I called them again on thursday they said that the earliest they could supply one was after the New Year! :banghead

So the quest was on and after a phone call to Milner Off Road a new wheel bearing was on its way with next day delivery. Due to the Christmas rush they could not guarantee that it would exctually be delivered the next day but they would do their best. (am this morning the delivery van turned up with a new bearing so I am really happy. :thumbs Price at Milner Off Road was £48 with £10.50 delivery charges and the same bearing from the dealer was £127 so a nice saving to be had.

Earlier this afternoon it was back to my local garage (Peregrine Garage, Hookwood (near London Gatwick Airport)) and he fitted the new grease seal and wheel bearing. All in all it took about 1.5 hour to put it all back together and roughly 3 hours to take it all apart on wednesday. Final bill for labour charges was £60. So he did a good job for a very good price.

It is a shame that it is raining quite heavily so the installation of the axle shaft has to wait till tomorrow. Fingers crossed to have the outside done and have it running before the New Year.

For now I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Thank You for following this thread. :jump

The car keeps fighting against me. Had everything ready for a first start, thought that it would be a good end to the year to have it running at last.

Unfortunately this was a let down as it turns over nicely but apart from that nothing happens. Removed the inlet hose on the fuel filter to see if there was any fuel coming from the fuel pump. Let it turn over with the inlet hose into an old bottle but no fuel. Removed the cover from the fuel pump and the problem was immediatly visible. One on the three wires had split so the pump will never run.

Removed the pump so that I could repair the wire on a workbench instead of trying to solder on top of the diesel tank. With the pump on the workbench it soon became apparent that I need to start looking for a new fuel pump. The wires are so brittle that split on the feed throught the fuel pump top. (in the photo the yellow wire is coming from this. It has now split were it goes through the top)

Looking at the pump it is obvious that one wire has been repaired before. Unfortunately this wire has also split just below the blue connector.

There is a fuel pump for sale on the net but I am awaiting a price on that.

Reading the internet a new fuel pump from the dealer is around £600 which is an awfull lot of money.

Does anybody know a company which overhauls these fuel pumps? As the pump is fine it is just the wires that need replacing.

Happy New Year!!!:beer

Oh and having the engin e turn over on the starter already resulted in an oil leak. Forgot to tighten one of the connection to the oil cooler. :doh

I'd strip off the old wires and solder in a new mini loom just after the multi plug thing :D Make them a bit longer too to take some stress off them :thumb2

That was my plan too Makeitfit, but I haven't got anything to solder to. Were the yellow wire disappears into the cap that is were it has broken, so no wire left to solder on. :(

Hmm, I think I have to eat humble pie. What I have been referring to as the fuel pump is actually the fuel gauge unit.:doh

the reason for no fuel must lie somewhere else.

another picture please

show us a picture of the other side of that gauge id be tempted to strip it down and solder in some new wire

Sorry Davenclaire, fuel gauge unit already back in the tank. Drilled a hole in the plastic till I hit the metal and then soldered a wire onto that. That should do the trick. At the moment only 12 liters of diesel in the tank so need to get some more to see if I get a reading.

Stick a container on the roof and go for a gravity feed, thus bypassing the pump.

This should at least get it going.
