A couple of weeks ago the eml light came.on:doh.
I used the paper clip trick to find the fault code.
Code 34.
So I checked all wiring connections and changed fuel filter and serviced it.
I used injector cleaner straight into the fuel filter to give a big dose:D

It's quite noisy on the top end when cold now. But doesn't take long to quieten down and seems to be running sort of ok.
although slightly lacking in power.

Yesterday we went for a run out upto our play ground the peak district for a walk.

It struggled.
There one particular hill near flash Buxton that it really struggled to get up. I had boot it in 2nd gear. Turbo was pushing 12psi ish.

It started to smell like I was burning something out.like a clutch smell.

Today I visited me mate to try and clear the eml light.
He tried 2 different computers and both said no faults showing.
No faults to clear.but the lights still on:doh.

I heard if the eml is on it won't give me full power till its off????
Confused.

Confused.[/QUOTE]

It might give full power with the MIL on. At least mine does.

My light came on today, soon as I saw it I put my foot to the floor in 3rd pulled hard all the way up so no lack of power, in my case code 143 so till someone enlightens me as to what it means I do not know, I think it depends on the clase of fault as to whether the ECU goes into limp mode or not, ckp sensor is certainly one, Rick

Seems some light limit top end speed, some do not.

Mileage should not be a deciding factor to the code.

Did you try the clearing light trick first with the quick tapping of the paper clip in one of the holes :thumb2

i was wondering about the mileage as he said he could smell burning it could be his clutch on the way out

Code 34 is injector lift sensor fault, so no 1 injector could be troublesome, air in the fuel can cause the same code as can a bad connection or indeed bad earths, re not being able to clear the light, there seems to be some anomolie re the paper clip method as I have two Mk 2 Tdi's my one with Zexel set up needs a 2 second bridge to get the codes, the Mrs with a Bosch set up needs a constant bridge to get the codes, 2nd bridge on the Zexel clears them, long bridge is needed on the Bosch to clear them, just my observations today, Rick

I too am thinking clutch.
nowt do with eml but my truck has been making weird noises. it was on this weird noise the eml came on. may be unrelated issues.
but if I pull off:D in do it lazy with no revs it sounds orrible. going up them hills thraping it and getting nowhere maybe slip.

34 is injector lift sensor but proper pc showing no codes.
im going to video a cold start tomoz and try get it make slip noise too.

tried the method as shown in the downloads. with the 2 second bridging. tried the other method of alex to rapidly poke the plug:augie.
and put it on 2 computers?
no codes read no codes to fix light on.
I feel like I cannot go any further until I get this dam light off.

Whats mileage then? Clutch only usually lasts around 125k mark iirc mine was at 128k when clutch went so i got an extra 3k :lol

Obviously not a proper diagnosis tool that Nissan would use, if the Terrano is saying there is a code there must be something in the system, not sure on which type but Ricks laptop was quite clever :thumb2

I don't see the need to use a diagnosis tool when the car tells you itself, very clever design :thumb2

Alas, have no fear Steve, we will get to the bottom of it, the video should help tomorrow too

Fair play, it's weird symptoms, the cold start and the smell under load, wouldn't have thought a rough run or starvation of fuel would give a burning smell :nenau

Hopefully it's not something else too

To rule the clutch out (or not) put it in 5th gear, handbrake on,floor it and let clutch up.
If it stalls clutch is ok,if it keeps running then it's slipping.

Good idea on handbrake test, and yes, what is mileage? :thumb2

Know quiet a few to get 100-120K out of their clutches even ones that have been used to tow sadly some do go a bit sooner

Some odd answers coming on here re not able to clear the mil light, first I would try is disconnect the battery for as long as you can as it is a computer after all a and it could have crashed, if that does not cure it then I think a trip to Nissan may be your only answer as it may be that your ECU has failed, I have ECU bits here but it will need NATS problems addressing, Rick

So in a nutshell,

Check for air leaks

Check no1 injector

Check clutch (5th gear test)

Disconnect battery for a prolonged time

Hope problem is gone :thumb2

First thing to do is just take a minute and go back to when the eml light first came on.
What happened ie did the truck lose power, noise from engine, was the engine under load or just coasting.
Next was the code 34
Air in fuel
No 1 injector sensor
Or wiring.
Air in fuel could be a leaking fuel line, primer pump, poorly sealed fuel filter or any other seal on the system.
No 1 injector sensor, get a multi meter and check it.Or swap it for a new/good second hand one.
Wiring again check it with a multi meter for continuity, clean the terminals inside the plugs and make sure the plugs are in good condition.
Main thing to remember is do one step at a time.
Don't move on to another thing until you have completely exhausted all possible checks.
Time consuming and frustrating but Process of elimination is the only way to go.

do not forget the water trap as it leaves light on if water is in it.
