Has anyone tried SVO either on its own or as a mix with diesel. I was thinking of trying a 50/50 mix of cooking oil and diesel, although I've heard of people using a lower ratio say 3:1 or 4:1 diesel and oil in different diesel engins. Chap down the garage chucks any old thing in his diesel vw caddy, including petrol if he gets any. He reckons corn oil is best. Ive read that others say rape seed oil is best. anyone using it. any do's or don'ts. 1996 Terrano 2.7 TD. Thanks AB

im a newbi oil burner,

don't go too heavy a % this time of the year as cooking oil freezes up unless its mixed with deisel etc.
I was warned and found out its true as my drum in the garage was like sludge till i warmed it, don't want that running thru the pump and inj's.

(thanks Ian  )

hello andypandy.
go to tesco find the world food isle and there should be 15ltr metal drums
of cooking oil lasti bought was about £12 approx.
It keeps going up in price every time i buy some.
i run 25% to 60 % svo depending on weather conditions .
BUT IF ITS FREEZING DO NOT USE IT.

has anyone got a mackro card or simular if so what can you get it for.

ps.
HOW DO I GET A MACKRO CARD?

ive read on another forum about adding acetone to your diesel aids mpg and smoother running etc i dont know anything about acetone so check it oyut first in case im wrong!

You can check the major supermarkets using the Tesco pricecheck web site here (just put in "vegetable oil" in the search box), and at the moment 15L of KTC oil is £11.50 at both Tesco and Asda.

In the summer I went to Tesco and put half a tank of Diesel in from the pump and went into the shop and topped up with cheapest Veg oil I could find. I think the performance was much the same as was the MPG but that for some reason the tick-over was a little lower and slightly lumpy but that was overcome by a click out on the hand throttle (choke thingy).

Truck smelled like a doughnut machine - wonderful!

I also use veg oil at the moment I mix it with 3 liters of cheap veg oil to 20 liters of diesel and it works great for me. Not only that I live near the border with Southern Ireland and the diesel there is only 88p a liter.

We currently run Ricardo on 33% fresh SVO (rape normally) and mineral diesel. I find the best source is Asda at £2.21 for 3 litres (Tesco is the same price but Asda's have a wider easier pouring neck).

So far run at least 5k this way with no noticable difference in performance.

A lot of comments are made about the fuel filters becoming blocked with debris flushed out of the tank and pipework by the cleaning action of the SVO for the first 500 miles or so. To this end I fitted a new Mann filter before we started and it ran fine - and left it there for 5k. Changed it for a fresh one last weekend and cut open the old one to see if any build-up was obvious. Result - no sign of anything!

Going to drop the engine oil this weekend and check that too. We'll see what that turns up, eh?

As the weather warms up we will up the ration to 50% veg but as the 'sunny South has been down to -5 DegC recently I'll leave it a few more weeks.

its the used/treated oil that strips varnish and crud from your system you dont get it with svo

have chat to one local takeaway fellas see where they get there suplies from maybe order few more !

Tesco online lists 3 litre bottles of vegetable oil at 78ppl, interestingly they have litre bottles of soya oil for 80ppl, and there is some info on the web that suggests soya oil would be better than some of the other choices.

I don't doubt it Jace. That's the problem with half the info you find on the net. It never gives half the real info. Or more likely it's info deemed from a mate of a friend who heard it from some bloke down the pub..... Almost always it refers to WVO in the same terms as SVO. LOL.

Worth checking though as the new filter cost the nuts of pea's anyhoo

agree with u there an surely if it cleans fuel system that good no bad thing if youre prepared for it !

I know biodiesel strips the dinodiesel varnish from the lines etc, and can block the filter, I think the problem with SVO or WVO is the ability for it to transfer more water soluble debris or even bacterial growth from the tank through the lines and block the filter.

I was fascinated by this thread. After reading some information on the web, and especially the stuff on the wikipedia about the fact that a diesel engine is actually an 'oil combustion engine' and the fact that the diesel engine was originally designed to run on any type of oil ... I took the plunge and added a litre of veg oil to my tank.

No splutter or cough - in fact the engine felt like it had stronger pull to me - prob just my imagination though.

Anyway - the engine took it no probs and no descernable smell. Probably won't do it again though unless we experience another fuel blockade or something.

mistral mac if buy any chance the mistral runs abit slugish don't worry it si the dirt in your tank flused to the filter just change the fuel filter and i would agree i have found some more mpg and not so noisy engine but that is maybe i use £20 diesel to 3liters veg oil never had prob when i first used it 20 -30 miles later car felt funny no revs no pulling power but changed fuel filter and never had a problem since and i have been using a mix now 5 months

Having read all the replies iv'e tried it with 3ltrs from asda (£2.21 ie 74p ltr ) with 30 ltrs of diesel - no problems at all so far so i'm going to try uping it to say 9 ltrs in 50 ltrs diesel. let you know what happens. AB
