I still think the electrostatic panel speakers need to be complemented by a nice sub ♫😉
I researched electrostatic speakers a few years back so I could get rid of my big old floor mounts. In the end a dug massive great holes in the wall and went for built in "mission" speakers.
Win win :D

i await the thorens and sme

It's winging it's way to you, as I type... Hopefully Monday, or Tuesday..

I take it your house had the big old thick stone walls, of a typical Welsh house. It would be so nice to have the speakers sunk into the wall.

So, can you explain why, in a few words, Electrostatic is supposed to be so good?

I think the Quad, Wharfedale, and Mission speakers are all made in the same factory in Huntingdon. I was doing some work in one part of the Mission factory, many years ago, and there was a section we were not allowed in, as they did secret work in there, but then one of the guys said something about them making Wharfedale speakers, when we asked about a strange noise we kept hearing. Basically, every speaker in the secret section was connected up, and made a whooping sound, which was then checked for frequency, to make sure they were perfect. At the time I had never heard of Quad, but I am sure he said something about it, and I presumed he meant Quadraphonic sound systems.

The factory was fantastic, it had little robot trolleys following coloured lines belting round everywhere, bringing supplies and taking way what they had worked on, to the people on the assembly line, and everything was futuristic, like all the doors slid open as you walked up to them, and the taps and toilets you wave your hand in front of, to turn on or flush, but this was about 15 or 20 years ago, before they became common place.

I have a sleeping bag the same as that one Clive, have you discovered it's worth yet, Rick

LOL... I am allergic to feathers, so even unpacking it to take the photo's had me sneezing for England... No chance I could ever sleep in one..

yes i saw some feathers when I unrolled it, but do not affect me, Rick

Cheers Guys.

The Thorens has gone. Luckily, he still had the manuals, so I was able to find all the information to lock everything down, and spent the best part of the afternoon making up packing for it.

Most of the other stuff does have the boxes, so now I am going round checking things work, and then pairing them up with their boxes and instructions, plus in a lot of cases the original sales pamphlets.

The first Quad system I started on, is the OLD one... This is some sort of Voodoo, as these 3 boxes can make sound come out of the 2 radiators in the second picture...:lol

LF to let you know that it arrived today and what can i say talk about well packeged wow took a long while to get it all out, well done.

being as it had the quad 5 pin lead i took it apart and put in a high quality phono lead straight on to the sme so in realaty it should give me a cleaner signal to amp.
i have not connected it up yet but hopfully it will be working today and the first lp will be tubular bells.

thank you.

Result, it did take me several hours to pack it up...

I was saying to Suz's that considering how much all the Quad stuff costs, and how well it is rated by everyone, I am surprised that they use such dodgy old DIN and Banana plugs to connect all the stuff together.

Considering Suz's dad paid the local audio shop to do everything and when it came to his audio, money was no object, so I can't even say it was him taking short cuts to save money.

I have found some letters to Quad, he had written, one asking about switching between speakers and headphones, they sent back a nice reply listing a few makes of switches, and he then bought the most expensive, which is basically a plastic box, with switch, headphone socket, and a terminal block, which I could have built for less than a tenner, but he paid £65 for.

Great choice for first play, I like that Album.

i have upgraded deck by putting isolation feet on the bottom and a new belt as it was fkd.i cant get a sure needle as obsolite but have foung japanes copy to original speck but as not put a record on it yet to test have not ordered oneyet.

That's a shame about the stylus, I never even thought about then being obsolete.

You will have to post a picture once it is all set up.
